HARFORD COUNTY - The Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is joining a massive nationwide movement to find local shelter animals their forever homes.

The 9th annual Clear The Shelters pet adoption event aims to alleviate pressure on the overcrowded shelter by waiving pet adoption fees from August 24 to August 27. During the 4-day mega adoption event, HSHC will be open on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

“About 2,500 animals enter our shelter every year,” said Bob Citrullo, executive director. “For the first half of this year, we’ve taken in 143 more dogs and 147 more cats than the same period last year, and we’ve come uncomfortably close several times to running out of kennel space. Clear The Shelters could not come at a better time, and we are excited to welcome everyone to the shelter for this fun and important event!”

Clear The Shelters, initiated in 2015, has an impressive record, facilitating the adoption of over 860,000 pets nationwide. The 2022 campaign witnessed record-breaking support, with over 161,000 pets adopted and $540,000 raised.

“Every adopter will receive a bag of goodies, including coupons, freebies, and information to help ease the pet’s transition from shelter to home,” Citrullo added. “Our team is very excited to welcome visitors to the shelter, introduce them to our animals, and help them take home their next new family member.”

Animals adopted from HSHC are spayed or neutered before adoption and also include all appropriate vaccinations and testing for infectious diseases, de-wormer, flea & tick preventative, a microchip, a free sample bag of pet food, and a general exam.

View the animals’ photos and profiles and complete an adoption application in advance by visiting www.harfordshelter.org/animals. Although adoption fees are waived, regular adoption procedures will apply.

The Humane Society of Harford County, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, annually manages around 2,500 animals, focusing on their welfare and well-being.
