HAVRE DE GRACE - Tydings Marina will host a special guest next month. The Golden Rule sailboat, a project by Veterans for Peace, will visit the Baltimore region in the coming weeks, including a stop in Havre de Grace.
The 34-foot boat is on a trip around the east coast of the United States, spreading its anti-war and anti-nuclear weapons message. The Golden Rule is scheduled to arrive in Annapolis on April 24, then Baltimore on April 27, and finally, a stop in Havre de Grace on May 4.
According to Veterans for Peace, the voyage's mission is to "spread the word about the continuing dangers of nuclear power, and the poisoning of the air, water, and soil from the entire nuclear cycle, from uranium mining to the disposal of nuclear waste."
The Golden Rule made its maiden voyage in 1958 when four peace activists set sail for the US Marshall Islands to protest the testing of nuclear weapons. Since that voyage, the ship has sailed from California to Hawaii and back twice, sinking twice in the process.
The ship was restored in 2015 and has been spreading its message ever since.
