Havre De Grace Schools Show Slight Improvement In 2021-2022 MSDE Report Card

HAVRE DE GRACE - The Maryland State Department of Education has released its report cards for the 2021-2022 school year. In the report, Havre de Grace schools showed slight improvements and remained near the state average in all categories.

Havre de Grace Elementary ranked in the top 52% of state-wide elementary schools, HdG Middle ranked in the top 53% of middle schools, and HdG High sits at the state average 50th percentile.

A combination of academic and school quality indicators determines the school star designations. Academic indicators are used to determine 65 percent of the possible points, while the school quality and student success indicator determines 35 percent of the possible points.

The report's highlight was Havre de Grace Elementary, which earned four out of five stars on the annual report card. The most significant improvements came in student performance in math and language arts. Students scored 9.5 out of 12.5 for growth in math understanding and 8.8 out of 12.5 in growth in language arts understanding. The elementary school also earned a perfect 10 out of 10 for its well-rounded curriculum.

Havre de Grace Middle School earned three out of five possible stars, with most of the negative statistics coming from student math comprehension. The report states that a meager 14.6% of Havre de Grace Middle School students are proficient in math. Middle School students did not perform much better in Language Arts, with only 36.3% proficient, according to the report.

HdG Middle only improved in one area: academic performance, with the school improving to a disappointing 24 out of 52 possible points.

Havre de Grace High School also earned three out of five stars. The highlight of the High School's grades is easily readiness for post-secondary success, where the school scored an impressive 7.7 out of 10.

According to the report, 27.4% of High School students were proficient in math, and 48.9% were proficient in Language arts, a marked improvement compared to Havre de Grace Middle.
