HAVRE DE GRACE - Havre de Grace residents have a new option for local beer. Market Street Brewery, located at 203 Market St in the Tidewater Marina, is preparing for its grand opening on January 27. The brewpub has been open to the public during a "soft-opening" phase since November 16.

Market Street Co-Owner, Andy Chabalowski, says he and his partner, Bill Bolton, are thrilled to bring craft beer to Havre de Grace.

"My dad was a home brewer, and I've home brewed with my wife. Bill likes beer a lot and has a detailed understanding of the process," Chabalowski said. "We love Havre de Grace, so we just kind of put the pieces together. The location where we landed happens to be on the water, which is nice. We hope it can add to a town that has been on an upward trajectory for years."

The new 5500-square-foot space is Harford County's first waterfront brewery. Its open plan allows visitors to watch the beer being brewed as they taste Market Street's diverse offerings. The building features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water and a sixteen-foot ceiling with exposed beams giving the space an open and inviting atmosphere.

Since its soft opening on November 16, Market Street has been serving a selection of ten craft beers and plans to add more with the help of its head brewer, Brad Poulin. Poulin previously worked for Oliver Brewing Company and has been in the beer-making business for years. According to Chabalowski, Poulin is always happy to share the joy of brewing with guests and teach them the basics of how to make your own beer.

To minimize the impact on the bay, the entire brewing process at Market Street is designed to use as little water as possible. All beer is brewed on-site using a unique brewing system where the whole beer-making process is performed in one conical fermentor.

"We use two gallons of water for every gallon of beer. Other systems historically are like seven gallons of water per gallon of beer. So it's really efficient," Chabalowski said. "It's great because you don't feel like you're just pumping water down the drain all day. There's only so much freshwater out there, so it's important."

Market Street is currently open to the public with a limited tap menu. The completed interior and full tap menu will be available at the grand opening on January 27.
