After a winter hiatus, the monthly outdoor get-togethers in downtown Havre de Grace known as "First Fridays" will resume this week, and there's a special twist this month. The May 3 event will serve as a "kick-off to the War of 1812 Commemoration Weekend," Havre de Grace Main Street posted on Facebook. Main Street sponsors the First Friday affairs and said this week's will feature "great music, so much great food and so many people..." Classic cars will be on display along Franklin Street, plus there will be puppeteers, face painting, CrossFit demonstrations and the music of Chris Monaghan, Main Street said. Don't be suprised if Havre de Grace is literally booming Friday afternoon. Tall ships are coming, and they are bringing their cannons with them. Two vessels, the Pride of Baltimore II and the Sultana, will dock in Havre de Grace for the city's War of 1812 bicentennial festival, May 3 to 5. "The Pride arrives Friday at high tide under sail, and they should have cannons going on their arrival," Brigitte Peters, manager of tourism for Havre de Grace, told Patch. According to Peters, the Pride will be docked at Hutchins Park, and the Sultana will be at Tidewater Marina. The Harford County Liquor Control Board unanimously approved requests from Rodger's House Tavern and MacGregor's.
First Fridays are starting up in Havre de Grace on May 3 and two businesses were given authorization Wednesday to sell alcohol outside. Rodger's House Tavern and MacGregor's will each have areas outside their establishments where they can sell beer on the first Friday of each month starting in May, after the Harford County Liquor Control Board unanimously approved their applications for outside event permits during its April 24 meeting. Held from May through October, the First Friday events are coordinated by the Havre de Grace Main Street organization and encourage people to gather in the city's downtown area on the first Friday of the month. City businesses are getting in gear for the War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration in May.
Don't be surprised to see cannons or muskets in storefronts around Havre de Grace. Businesses and building owners are getting their displays ready for the War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration weekend, and Havre de Grace Main Street is giving them an incentive. Main Street is giving away $500 in prizes—$250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place—to those with the best War of 1812 displays in their storefronts. The purpose is "to show off our town and your business for all those who live in and visit our city" from May 3 to 5 for the Havre de Grace War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration, according to a flyer promoting the competition. On Wednesday morning, Havre de Grace officials accepted an $86,500 award from Maryland's War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission in Annapolis. Havre de Grace was among 22 organizations that the commission and Maryland Senate President Mike Miller recognized as recipients of its Star-Spangled 200 Grant Program. The commission awarded $2.1 million total in grants, according to a press release from Star-Spangled 200 Inc. Of that, $400,000 supported "Chesapeake Campaign" events, which are family-friendly happenings to commemorate the War of 1812 bicentennial, observed in Maryland from 2012 to 2015. The 5K Redcoat Run will take place this spring, as part of the city's War of 1812 bicentennial weekend, a commemoration of the May 3, 1813, British attack on Havre de Grace that burned the city to the ground. CrossFit Havre de Grace is co-sponsoring the 5K Redcoat Run, according to the race registration page, which states: "Come out and run with CrossFit Havre de Grace and the Rotary Club as we remember this event, 200 years later."
