Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst sent this letter to all members of the Harford County Board of Education. A copy was submitted to Patch: ——— I am writing this letter to inform the Harford County Board of Education of the numerous issues the Susquehanna Hose Company has been faced with at the Havre de Grace High School. Over the course of the last three years, the Susquehanna Hose Company has experienced a spike in responses for natural gas leaks at the Havre de Grace High School. On every dispatch, our crews were faced with a natural gas leak, which required an evacuation of the building. On each of these calls, Susquehanna Hose Company crews investigated, located the source of the natural gas leak, and disabled the source of …

The Susquehanna Hose Company responded to an emergency call at David Craig's family residence Tuesday in Havre de Grace.
UPDATED (12:15 p.m.)—A malfunctioning furnace at the Havre de Grace home of Harford County Executive David Craig caused a commotion but left no one injured Tuesday morning. The furnace filled the basement with smoke in the home in the 400 block of Congress Avenue, Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst said. Hurst said a seven-man crew from the Susquehanna Hose Company was on the scene in less than two minutes just before 9 a.m. Tuesday. He said the crew ventilated the basement using a fan. The crew cleared the scene within 15 minutes of arrival. Harford County spokesman Robert Thomas, speaking on behalf of Craig, said: "He is always appreciative of the work the Susquehanna Hose Company does serving their community and he is grateful …

The Susquehanna Hose Company dive team responded to a possible drowning Saturday.
A kayaker who reportedly capsized in the Susquehanna River Saturday evening was still missing as of Sunday night, Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst told Patch. The Susquehanna Hose Company dive team responded to the incident, which took place north of the Mason Dixon Line. Two men launched kayaks on Muddy Creek to begin a camping trip. When the missing man's boat overturned, the other man attempted to rescue him, but his kayak flipped, as well, the report said. One made it to shore, while the other was reported missing, according to LancasterOnline. Dave Williams of the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association told ExploreHarford personnel from Darlington and Whiteford volunteer fire companies also joined in the rescue …

An incident Sunday was the second in Havre de Grace in three days.
A carbon monoxide detector helped save a Havre de Grace family from a potential poisoning Sunday, emergency officials said. A detector alerted residents in a home in the 100 block of George Court Sunday, and Susquehanna Hose Company volunteers responded to find carbon monoxide levels at 100 parts per million, Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst told Patch Sunday evening. Only one person was home at the time of the incident. A carbon monoxide incident took place on the same block last year. The Hose Company responded to an incident Friday night that sent one Havre de Grace resident to Harford Memorial Hospital. Like Friday's incident, Sunday's carbon monoxide leak was due to a faulty stove. However, Sunday's incident left no injuries, Hurst said…

Carbon Monoxide levels in the Havre de Grace home were at 200 ppm Friday night.
A Havre de Grace woman was found unconscious Friday evening, shortly before emergency personnel determined there was a carbon monoxide leak in her home. The unconscious, middle-aged woman was transported to Harford Memorial Hospital. Her condition was unknown Friday night. Due to a faulty stove, carbon monoxide levels in the home were found to be at 200 parts per million (ppm), Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst told Patch. The Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps responded to a residence in the 200 block of Gracecroft Court around 6 p.m. Friday. After suspecting possible carbon monoxide poisoning, Ambulance Corps Chief Jeremy Mothershed requested the Hose Company to investigate. Hurst said initial investigations showed no signs of …

Having the fastest volunteer fire company in the nation is one thing. But what good are firefighters if they get to a fire and don't know how to put it out? The Susquehanna Hose Company isn't just fast. They're fast, and they're prepared. Havre de Grace's volunteer fire department logged 12,136 hours of training in 2011—more than 505 days worth of training. "The Hose Company has never done hours comparable to that," Chief Scott Hurst told Patch Monday. "A few people had over 400 hours. That's an enormous amount of training in a year's span." Hurst said the company has averaged about 7,000 hours of annual training over the last five years. At last summer's fire convention in Ocean City, the station awarded with the top amount of training …

The Susquehanna Hose Company deemed Saturday's inaugural event a success.
In a city known for its unique seasonal events, the inaugural Duck Dunk made a splash. When all is said and done, the Susquehanna Hose Company fundraiser likely will generate $9,000 for Havre de Grace's volunteer fire company, Chief Scott Hurst said Monday. The event was so successful that most participants have agreed to dunk again in 2013. "We have a lot of people telling us they're coming back next year," Hurst said. "Our goal was to raise $5,000, and I think we'll almost double that." Hurst said t-shirts—like those presented to the participants and sold to spectators Saturday—are still available. Hurst added that he was overwhelmed by the amount of pledge funds raised by the participants. The 31 dunkers who followed through with the …

Patch editor Sean Welsh and his wife are participating in Saturday's Duck Dunk.
I used to sit on my grandparents' sailboat on Pier 6 at the City Yacht Basin as a kid, watching a dog take flight off the dock at the launch ramp, soaring after a toy thrown by his owner. On Saturday, I'll be the dog. In virtually the same spot the dog used to plunge into the refreshing summer water, I'll be joining a couple dozen dedicated lunatics in taking the plunge—or dunk, rather—for charity. My wife, Liz, and I will be participating in the inaugural Duck Dunk to benefit the Susquehanna Hose Company. Patch is one of the sponsors of the event, too. Look for our logo on the shirts they'll be giving to dunkers and selling to spectators. You might say that Havre de Grace Patch is all-in on the Duck Dunk. I'm just not sure how "all in" …
