Harford Family House holds its annual home run derby fundraiser at Ripken Stadium.
Hitting a home run at Ripken Stadium can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Winning a car is even more uncommon. Participants in next month's Home Runs For The Homeless event will have a chance to do both. The event, which benefits the Harford Family House, will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 14. Teams of four will swing for the fences, and for targets around the field. Entry is $250 per player, or $1,000 for a team. A 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4x4—which is valued at $37,000—from Jones Junction will go to a participant who hits a specific target on the field. Teams will be scored on distance of their combined hits. The winning team will receive a trophy. The event will be capped by an awards celebration—which is free to …

The Aberdeen IronBirds opened the home half of 2012 Wednesday at Ripken Stadium.
The IronBirds rallied to tie Wednesday's home opener before Hudson Valley pulled away in the ninth for a 5-3 win at Ripken Stadium. See the IronBirds website for a complete play-by-play and a box score. Renegades righty Taylor Guerrieri scattered two hits while striking out six in five innings. "We faced a pretty good pitcher," manager Gary Allenson said. "He had four major league pitches: a live fastball, good breaking ball, and a really good change-up. He mixed it up." Once he departed, though, the IronBirds came back to life. Allenson praised his ballplayers for tying the game up with a three-run, sixth-inning rally. He noted a strong fan base in his first game with the IronBirds, but said he didn't think the players were overwhelmed by…

Havre de Grace Patch readers met a challenge on Facebook recently.
The Aberdeen IronBirds start their 11th season at Ripken Stadium tonight. The story of the IronBirds' birth is a long one. In short: a hometown hero brought the team here. Cal Ripken, of course, played in 2,632 straight games amid a Hall of Fame career with the Orioles. He retired in 2001, and in 2002, purchased a minor league team, moved them to Aberdeen and the IronBirds were born. Ripken was born in Havre de Grace and grew up in Aberdeen. About a month ago, with opening night in my sights, I set out a challenge to our Facebook fans: Fun challenge, Facebook pals: Let's get to 2,632 "likes" (the number of consecutive games Cal Ripken played before taking a day off) before the Aberdeen IronBirds home opener on June 20.
