The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association is launching a new initiative to teach parents, coaches and students the ins and outs of college athletics.
The state's governing body of high school athletics is striving to make the transition to college easier on student-athletes. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has put together a program to help families and schools better understand the process of college recruiting and eligibility. The service is provided through The Recruiting Education Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization. "We are happy to provide this informational program to our student-athletes and their families at no cost," MPSSAA Executive Director Ned Sparks said in a news release. Havre de Grace went 13-5 on the softball diamond in 2011.
A 13-5 record with a starting lineup including five freshmen and a sophomore leaves plenty of hope for the future. Thats where the Havre de Grace softball team stands heading into the 2012 season, after a successful year with a young squad a year ago. The Warriors are led by senior pitcher Hayley Kitts, and a combination of youth and experience. "We look to be extremely competitve and I believe this is my most athletic and versatile team in my [six] years running the team," Warriors coach Ed Yodris wrote in an email. The Havre de Grace boys and girls basketball teams head into the MPSSAA playoffs.
The Havre de Grace boys and girls basketball teams went in polar opposite directions in 2011-2012. While the boys suffered from an exodous of veteran talent, the girls improved significantly. The Warriors girls (4-15) earned the No. 7 seed in the Class 1A North and will play host to Overlea Friday night. Patch updates the latest standings in the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference.
The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference released updated standings Monday morning with one significant change from last week. Elkton's boys basketball team forfeited 10 conference wins for the use of an ineligible player. The team forfeited a total of 19 regular season wins, according to The Cecil Whig. Elkton athletic director Jim Leitgeb confirmed the forfeits, but declined comment to The Whig on the nature of the ineligibility. The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference basketball championships will be held Wednesday at Harford Tech. Aberdeen plays C. Milton Wright for the girls championship at 5 p.m. In the boys title game, Patterson Mill and Edgewood meet at 7 p.m. Fallston won the UCBAC wrestling tournament over the weekend. …

Havre de Grace finished strong in the region swim meet Saturday.
Havre de Grace came home with two region winners Saturday. The Warriors boys took second and the girls fourth in the region swim meet. The Warriors boys finished with an individual title and a relay crown. C. Milton Wright won the girls and boys titles. See the PDF included with this post for individual event results. Renz Amato won the 50 freestyle in 23.51—edging C. Milton Wright's Ian Kearney. The Warriors boys 200 freestyle relay team—with Amato, Robbie Orzewicz, Steven Ashman and Paul Butz—won in 1:35.91, edging Fallston. The Chesapeake Division is still up for grabs, as are both girls basketball divisions. Rising Sun and Perryville have clinched division wrestling titles. C. Milton Wright won the boys meet, girls meet, and the overall county championship.
C. Milton Wright followed up Tuesday's girls county championship with a boys title Thursday, leaving the Mustangs as the undisputed Harford County swim champions. The Mustangs edged Havre de Grace for the boys title after slipping past Patterson Mill in Tuesday's girls championship. The Huskies finished second and the Warriors third in the overall championship. See the attached PDFs for the full boys and girls results. C. Milton Wright was the best of 10 in the pool Tuesday night.
Winter weather postponed the Harford County boys swim championship scheduled for Wednesday evening, allowing the C. Milton Wright girls to prolong their celebration. The Mustangs won the girls county title Tuesday at Magnolia Middle School, edging Patterson Mill, 397-318. North Harford, Bel Air and Havre de Grace rounded out the top five. For event results, see the PDF document included with this article. The boys meet was scheduled for Wednesday evening at Magnolia Middle School. Harford County Public Schools canceled all evening events due to winter weather. The boys competition has been rescheduled for Thursday evening.
