Havre de Grace won its annual tournament behind big hits and great pitching.
Megan Thompson pitched the Warriors to a Game 1 win and Taylor Smith provided the power throughout as the Havre de Grace softball team cruised to the James R. Harris Tournament championship Saturday in Havre de Grace. The Warriors won the opener against Fallston, 7-0, as Thompson tossed a three-hitter. Smith was 2-for-4 with two homers and three runs batted in to lead Havre de Grace's eight-hit attack. Smith struck again in the title game, homering once and driving in four runs in a 2-for-3 performance as the Warriors slid past Harford Tech, 11-1. Havre de Grace defeated Bel Air in Harford County softball action Thursday.
Havre de Grace used a complete game from the pitcher's circle to defeat Bel Air in an Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference softball game Thursday. Megan Thompson tossed a two-hitter in a complete-game effort as the visiting Warriors toppled Bel Air, 5-2. Thompson also helped her own cause by doubling twice in three at-bats and driving in three runs. Rebecca Ashman went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. With the win, Havre de Grace improved to 2-0. Havre de Grace and St. Mary's meet for the title showdown at Stancill Field.
Havre de Grace will play for the state softball championship Saturday at its home park. The senior girls all-stars will host St. Mary's in a winner-take-all clash at 11 a.m. at Stancill Field. St. Mary's held off a rallying Havre de Grace squad Friday night for an 8-5 win in the opening game. Havre de Grace, coming from the winner's bracket, needed just one win. St. Mary's required two wins after coming from the consolation bracket. Thursday's game was suspended with Havre de Grace trailing, 5-1. A three-run first gave St. Mary's a four-run advantage as rain and threatening thunderstorms forced officials to suspend play in the senior division state softball championship Thursday night. The game will be resumed at 6 p.m. Friday at Stancill Field. Havre de Grace, which came out of the winner's bracket, needs just one win to claim the state title. So it comes as no surprise that the manager of the Havre de Grace senior softball team said Thursday his team is calm and prepared to play for the state championship. "They're ready to go," Thompson told Patch. "They're ready to play." Maybe the calm is being able to sleep in their own beds and play on the diamond they've called home their entire lives. UPDATED (1 p.m.)—Riley Arnold threw a complete game and Havre de Grace defeated Rising Sun, 8-2, on Tuesday to clinch the District 5 senior softball championship Tuesday night at Stancill Field. Havre de Grace visits Perryville today for the region title.
Taylor Smith homered to spark a 8-2 win in Thursday's region semifinal, putting the Havre de Grace softball team in the Class 1A North region title game Friday afternoon at Perryville. The Warriors visit the Panthers at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the state semifinals. Havre de Grace is seeking its first state tournament appearance, while Perryville is seeking its fifth. Smith hit a three-run homer in the first inning Thursday and later added a double. She scored twice, going 2-for-3. Kaitlyn Husfelt was also 2-for-3, driving in two runs on a pair of singles while also reaching base via a walk. Emily Lewis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Havre de Grace advanced with a 13-2 win on Monday.
Megan Thompson hit a grand slam and Riley Arnold threw a complete game as the Havre de Grace softball team defeated Sparrows Point, 13-2, on Monday at Stancill Field. With the victory, Havre de Grace advances to a Class 1A North semifinal Wednesday. The time and location of that game is to be determined. The No. 4 seed Warriors will face either No. 8 Western Tech or No. 1 Baltimore Freedom Academy. Havre de Grace softball and baseball will start the MPSSAA postseason this week.
The Havre de Grace softball and baseball teams are set for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association playoffs. The Warriors learned their opponents for the upcoming MPSSAA tournament. See the PDF files with this post depicting the brackets with the full slate of games. The Warriors softball team earned a first-round bye with the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Sparrows Point in the Class 1A North second round on May 14. The Warriors baseball team was given a No. 9 seed and will visit No. 8 Perryville on Friday in Class 1A North first round action. The winner will visit No. 1 seed BDJ/Civitas on May 14. Update from tonight's game. Hdg lost a hard fought battle 8-5. They came back to tie it 5-5 in the 3rd inning of tonights game when it resumed. They will play tomorrow @ 11am for the State Championship!!!!   more ›
