Havre de Grace Police Ready for War of 1812 Festivities

Police said they have a team prepared for the downtown events May 3 to 5.

For the Havre de Grace Police Department, working special events is old hat. "We have all hands on deck," Pfc. Jeff Gilpin said, in advance of the War of 1812 bicentennial festival. He explained that police know the drill for special events, since they handle the Seafood Festival and the Fourth of July parade and carnival, among others downtown. The Harford County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police and Aberdeen Police Department will be assisting the Havre de Grace Police Department with this weekend's activities, which the city expects will lure 20-to-30,000 visitors. "We have a huge response force so everyone can enjoy the event without any worries," Gilpin said. "But our primary goal is to not be intrusive; we’re there as needed…

Manufacturer to Replace Havre de Grace Teen's Missing Wheelchair

"I have goose bumps from all of this," says the teen's mother. "What a happy ending."

After learning that a wheelchair disappeared from Bay View Estates, the chair manufacturer is giving a new, $4,000 wheelchair to the Havre de Grace teen who used it. Matthew, 18, has cerebral palsy and depended on his Convaid Safari Tilt wheelchair to travel distances without using supports. Cerebral palsy is a movement or muscle disorder caused by abnormal brain development. "His walk is very unsteady and he wears braces on both feet," said Sandy Schwartz, Matthew's mother. "He can't walk without supervision." Two years ago, Matthew's family bought him the customized wheelchair from Convaid, a company based in Torrance, CA, so that he could go to summer camp. Recently, Matthew's wheelchair went missing from the driveway in Bay View …

Someone who depends on making a living searching for scrap metal and items to resell could very well have taken it. So far, no one has come forward with any information. I hope our…   more ›
