VIDEO: Shawn Forton On Mural, What's Next

Artist Shawn Forton was recognized by the city Friday for his month-long mural project.

Shawn Forton took a few moments to chat with Patch after being recognized at a Friday ceremony in Havre de Grace. The artist behind the acclaimed mural near Warren Street said he has hopes of doing more murals in the future. Forton was presented proclamations from the city and Harford County, and he handed out nearly a dozen awards of his own, thanking some of those who helped make the project a reality. Visible Progress On Shawn Forton's Mural

Shawn Forton is painting a Havre de Grace-themed mural.

The daily updates on Shawn Forton's Facebook page simply outline his project. On Monday: "I plan on working on Day 7 of the wall today if this rain will hurry and pass." Thursday: "Day 9 of the HDG Mural has begun." The real effort is visible in the sweat dripping from Forton's forehead atop a ladder leaning against his latest masterpiece. The Havre de Grace native has turned a block wall along the Amtrak line behind the Susquehanna Hose Company No. 1 House into a mural featuring landmarks and scenes from around Havre de Grace. Artist Shawn Forton Begins Public Mural Project

The Havre de Grace artist is painting a concrete wall along a railroad in Havre de Grace.

Some people take off a week in the summer to vacation at the beach. Shawn Forton took off the entire month of July to create a civic masterpiece. The Havre de Grace native—with the help of the city, the Susquehanna Hose Company and the approval from Amtrak—is painting a concrete wall along the train tracks behind the the Hose Company's House No. 1 on Juniata Street. The mural is visible from Warren Street. Forton, whose profile as an artist has grown with his portraits of professional athletes, has been updating his progress on Facebook.
