The upcoming trip marks the first travel abroad trip Havre de Grace High School has organized.
More than a dozen Havre de Grace High School students will be spending spring break in England as part of a for-credit, school organized trip. Deborah Cummings, head of the high school's English department, and fellow English teacher Elizabeth Ennis are organizing the trip that will begin March 29. "A lot of the students in Havre de Grace really have never done a lot of travel and I think this is a great opportunity to expose them to the opportunities of the world," Cummings said, later adding, "I think it will be life changing [for the students], actually." A teacher's union president suggested two Harford schools may one day be forced to close if Harford County Public Schools aren't granted more funding from Harford County.
UPDATED (11:27 p.m.)—Despite the suggestion from a teacher's union president that Harford County Public Schools may need to consider closing some institutions, no such school shutdowns are imminent, officials said Monday. Ryan Burbey, president of the Harford County Education Association, said during public comment at last week's Harford County Council meeting that a decline in funding for education may eventually force schools to consider shutting down some buildings. Burbey addressed an "imminent funding crisis" for Harford County Public Schools. "If we don’t do something soon, your schools face dramatic cuts," he said. The Warriors aren't leading their respective divisions in girls basketball, boys basketball and wrestling, but Havre de Grace's teams have division records at .500 or better. The Harford County Board of Education postponed the vote to determine how to move forward with a proposed new high school in Havre de Grace.
The Harford County Board of Education postponed its vote on how to move forward with a new high school in Havre de Grace during a meeting Monday in Bel Air. In tabling the vote, the board also approved a motion to allow Superintendent Dr. Robert Tomback to explore alternative plans. Tomback previously recommended wholesale replacement of the school, rather than options for renovation/modernization of the current building. The board empowered Tomback with the authority to explore alternative sites for a new building, according to a statement from Harford County Public Schools.
