Meadowvale Chess Tournament Dedicated to 9-Year-Old Cancer Survivor
Proceeds from the 'Checkmate Cancer' fundraiser will help with medical bills for a Meadowvale student diagnosed with liver cancer.
The Meadowvale Chess Club is making a move it hasn't tried before. On Saturday, the group is holding its year-end tournament, which is open to the public—but this time, the event is a fundraiser for one of its members. Third-grade student and chess player Thomas Saacks, 9, was diagnosed with liver cancer in December. All proceeds from the May 18 tournament, called "Checkmate Cancer," will go to his family for medical expenses. The effort is "a small town community...rallying around a young man when he needs it most," Councilman David Glenn, a past president of the Meadowvale PTA, wrote in an email to Patch.
