Havre de Grace Elementary Teacher Named Top In County

Kristin Schaub was named Harford County Teacher of the Year during a banquet Wednesday evening in Havre de Grace.

For Kristin Schaub, Harford County Public Schools both inspired and fullfilled her career path. Schaub was named Harford County Teacher of the Year for the 2013-2014 school year during a banquet at the Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace Wednesday. The fifth grade Havre de Grace Elementary School teacher entered the Harford County school system as a special education student when she was a young girl, she said during her acceptance speech. She ultimately graduated high school ranked tenth in her class. She attributes her scholastic success to her teachers—the very same teachers who inspired her profession. Today, Schaub strives to have the same kind of impact on her own students' lives. At least one of her students feels Schaub has …

Thanks for Your Coats, Havre de Grace!

Coat donations benefitted children at Havre de Grace Elementary School.

Thanks for sharing your coats, Havre de Grace. Because of your donations, children at Havre de Grace Elementary School were outfitted with proper winter attire around the holidays. Our coat drive in Havre de Grace was a success, delivering about two to three dozen coats to the school between November and the first week of January. We'll look to replicate the drive again next winter. Still have some extra kid-size coats lying around? Awesome. You can contact the school, or reach out to me and I'll figure out how to get the coats there myself. My email is sean.welsh@patch.com. Have a community-oriented event you need help in promoting? Post it on our calendar here. Have an ongoing initiative you've organized? Tell us about it in our Local …

Donate Your Coats To Havre de Grace Children

Havre de Grace Patch is collecting winter clothes for Havre de Grace Elementary School.

Have extra coats, gloves, hats or scarves sitting around? Make Thanksgiving and the holidays special for a local child by donating your coats and winter gear to Patch—which is collecting items for Havre de Grace Elementary School students until the end of December. Drop your items in the green bin in the lobby at the Visitors Center on Pennington Avenue. Patch will collect the bin when full, deliver it to the school and bring the bin back for more. We did this in 2010, shortly after launching Patch, and filled a large bin at least three times. Let's do it again! The school is hosting a mitten and hat tree, but is in need of items for students who may not be as fortunate this season. Drop your items at the Visitors Center (450 Pennington …

Fourth Grader's Essay Wins Scholarship

Havre de Grace's Gabriella Vega won a Ben Carson Scholarship.

When fourth-grader Gabriella Vega read her award-winning essay at Monday's Havre de Grace City Council meeting, a journalist in the room shuddered. Suddenly, I feared I may have encountered my own replacement. I was blown away by the Havre de Grace Elementary School student's writing—as well as her ability to read it confidently and with charisma in a room full of big people. Gabby's mom shared her essay with me during a brief recess in the meeting, and I decided to re-type it for Patch readers to enjoy.  I'll step aside and let the real writer take over from here: ——— "Hi! My name is Gabriella Vega and I am a fourth grader at Havre de Grace Elementary School. I am choosing to write about a teacher that has inspired me through her hard …
