Candidates for City Council and Mayor may apply next month to run in the May election.
Election season is almost here again. Havre de Grace holds its annual vote in May, but candidates for City Council and Mayor may begin filing to run in the election next month. Residents will elect three council members and a mayor in the May 7 election. All officials serve two-year terms, with three of the six council seats up for a vote each spring. Candidates may file to run in the election on weekdays from March 5 to March 19. For all the details regarding the filing process—including qualifications—click here. Carol Mathis is moving on from being director of administration for the City of Havre de Grace, according to the mayor.
There's a vacancy in the City of Havre de Grace administration. Carol Mathis, who has been the director of administration for Havre de Grace since 2007, is leaving her position. Mathis' three-year contract was set to expire at the end of 2012, and she did not ask to renew it, according to the mayor of Havre de Grace. "It’s pretty much cut and dry," Mayor Wayne Dougherty said. "Every three years, contracts come up for renewal and she opted not to renew hers." Patch was unable to reach Mathis for comment. No one answered her home phone, and her voicemail box was full. Her city email is being redirected. The mayor said that currently, Mathis is on leave. Havre de Grace City Council met Monday night at City Hall.
Havre de Grace City Council honored two longtime volunteers and recognized four outstanding students during Monday's meeting at City Hall. City Council also advanced three pieces of legislation—voting in favor of a lease agreement with the Chamber of Commerce, an understanding with the National Park Service and a grant application to help provide state-funded support for a development in the city. The city recognized Joe Kochenderfer and Rene Lambert for their years of service to the city. Both men recently resigned positions on city commissions or committees. The Havre de Grace planning commission made the most recent advancement Monday.
The Havre de Grace planning commission recommended Monday that the city approve the concept plan for a new Upper Chesapeake hospital development near the Interstate 95 interchange. The rendering came down at the commission's Monday night meeting, moving the enormous project forward toward approval. » Read more on the proposed hospital development here. Havre de Grace City Council approved the amendments to a pair of leases with local businesses and also gave a thumbs-up to the proposed Graw Days celebration in the city. City Council met for 58 minutes Tuesday—a day later than normal thanks to Monday's Labor Day holiday. With regard to the property purchase next to the lighthouse the city staff and council have an obligation to disclose what benefit this purchase might have for the taxpaying citizens of HDG rather than asking us to vote on a ‘just because we say so’ basis.
