The Harford County Public School System is looking for a local resident with financial management experience to fill an open seat on the system's audit committee, school officials announced Monday. The five-member committee meets at least quarterly and helps the Board with financial oversight, serving as an independent monitor on school system financial reporting, according to the release. Members are not compensated and are appointed to serve up to two three-year terms. Seven of Harford County's 10 public high schools made The Washington Post's annual list of the nation's most challenging high schools, Harford County Public Schools officials announced Wednesday The list, which included 123 Maryland schools in all and nearly 2,000 nationwide, was published Sunday on the Post website. The paper ranks the schools by what it calls the "Challenge Index," which takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education and divides it by the number of graduating seniors. Schools may be closed, but the Harford County Board of Education will still meet.
Although school was canceled in Harford County Monday, the Board of Education meeting will go on as planned. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., according to Teri Kranefeld, spokeswoman for the school system. Until noon, Harford County was under a winter weather advisory due to freezing rain, meaning travel conditions could be dangerous. As a result of the wintry mix, Kranefeld announced Monday morning that Harford County schools would be closed for the day. The school board meeting will proceed as scheduled, but Kranefeld said recognitions would be postponed. The honorees were removed from the agenda Monday morning. Public schools in Harford County opened on time Thursday morning in spite of snow. Neighboring Baltimore County schools opened two hours late, as did schools in a few other jurisdictions further south. While some areas in Baltimore saw two inches of snow, Harford County only saw a light dusting, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter weather advisory until 11 a.m. Thursday for the Baltimore-Washington region. A student was flown out following an incident at the school Tuesday.
A medevac helicopter was called to Harford Christian School Tuesday after a student suffered a head injury, according to the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS official Twitter feed. Shortly before 1:20 p.m. a 14-year-old student at the school hit his head on a padded wall at the school, according to the post. No further information was available as of post time. The Patterson Mill High School senior is this year's student representative.
Patterson Mill High School senior Panashe Mutombo was sworn in as Harford County Board of Education's 25th student representative Monday evening. Mutombo steps into the role as the county's first student representative with partial voting rights. He was able to employ those rights Monday by voting in favor of the school system's branding initiative. The teen says he looks forward to representing Harford County's student body anyway he can.
