Work on Tydings Bridge Scheduled for May 11 and 12

Drivers should anticipate more traffic on roads in Cecil County, transportation officials say.

The Maryland Transportation Authority announced that foundation work on the Millard E. Tydings Memorial Bridge this weekend may result in construction noise and truck traffic. Located on Interstate 95, the Tydings Bridge runs across the Susquehanna River connecting Cecil and Harford counties. Trucks carrying concrete for the repairs will be on the Cecil County side of the bridge. They will travel from Interstate 95 to MD Route 222 to US Route 40 to Coudon Boulevard to MD Route 7 to Roundhouse Drive in Perryville, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. Bridge work is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, and continue until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. If weather is bad, the work may be rescheduled for May 18 and 19. …

Port Deposit Featured in National Geographic for Turtle Preservation

Citizens in Port Deposit are collaborating with academic and state institutions to save the map turtle.

When an endangered species collides with human needs, typically there is conflict. "But in the case of Port Deposit, the opposite happened," Towson University biology professor Richard Seigel told National Geographic. The magazine highlighted Port Deposit this month for the town's work with Towson to support the Northern map turtle, which is endangered in the state of Maryland. On May 7, Port Deposit and Towson University are holding a celebration to highlight their efforts to rally around the Northern map turtle through research, education and ecotourism. River Sweep to Clean Up Havre de Grace Shore Saturday

Earth Day isn't until Monday but citizens in Havre de Grace, Port Deposit and Perryville are doing their part for the planet a couple of days early. The Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway is holding its annual River Sweep on Saturday, April 20, near waterways in Harford and Cecil counties. Participants in the cleanup will pick up trash along the Susquehanna River and tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay. River Sweep is now in its 13th year, according to Examiner.com, which reported that last year, 850 volunteers contributed to the effort. Volunteers should wear old clothes, bring gloves and meet at one of these five locations at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20: The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. 4 Darlington Firefighters Taken To Hospital After Training Accident

The fire company members were injured during training operations on the Susquehanna River.

A training accident on the Susquehanna River sent four members of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company to a local hospital for evaluation Sunday afternoon. Around 1 p.m. the fire company was conducting training on the Susquehanna River when the boat carrying four members hit a rock about 100 yards off the Port Deposit shore line, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association. Two people were thrown into the water while the other two were knocked into the decking of the boat, Gardiner said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Port Deposit Man Killed by Tractor

George Tyson, 74, was a farmer who had been in his field plowing when he died Monday.
