Federal Cuts Could Cripple Public Education, Say National Leaders

There would be more than $400 billion in federal funding cuts in public education nationwide if sequestration provisions are implemented, according to the National School Boards Association.

If a series of budget cuts known as "sequestration" takes effect, it would be a crippling blow to the public education system, national education leaders said Wednesday. The first round of cuts will occur Jan. 2, 2013, if congress does not come up with another way to reduce the federal budget deficit, and as a result, school districts stand to lose $82,000 for every $1 million in federal funds, said Deborah Rigsby, federal legislation director for the National School Boards Association. Harford County asked for $26.2 million in federal funds for the 2012–2013 school year, which accounted for for 4.8 percent of its budget. "The sequestration fund cuts could result in high class sizes, reduced programming and the consolidation or closing of …

Havre de Grace High School Parents Seek a Safe and Secure Learning Enviroment

Parents cite security issues as a prime reason why a new school is due in Havre de Grace.

Havre de Grace City Councilman David Glenn said security issues at Havre de Grace High School are "complicated." Glenn, who played an instrumental role in the renovations Meadowvale Elementary School in the 1990s, wants it to be Havre de Grace High School's turn, since it is the oldest standing high school in Harford County. "The main entrance is geographically separated from the main office. The Havre de Grace campus is split in two by Congress Avenue. The gymnasium and music department is on the opposite side of the street. It's always unlocked, allowing anyone to enter the building," Glenn said. "Years ago, when society seemed to be much simpler, this was an adequate arrangement. However, given the current problems both nationally and …

We moved into Bulle Rock 5 years ago. We now have roughly 900 homes sold in the community which are all paying high taxes and are part of the city of Havre De Grace. We also pay dues for private streets, our own snow removal, trash removal, lawn service etc and we pay for our own lighting. That said we pay a lot and take very little back for what we contribute in taxes. The population is growing …   more ›

Wheeler Elected President, Grambo Vice President for Board

The Harford County Board of Education held its first nine-member meeting in history Monday.

Leonard Wheeler and Rick Grambo have been elected as president and vice president, respectively, of the Harford County Board of Education. Wheeler, who has been serving as the board’s vice president, replaces Mark Wolkow, whose last meeting was in June. Wheeler was appointed to the board in 2008. Grambo, who was elected in 2010, had been serving in an appointed position. He was sworn in for a second time this afternoon to begin his elected term. Grambo nominated Wheeler before he was approved for the position by a 9–0 vote. No other members of the board were nominated. "Dr. Wheeler clearly possesses the tools and wisdom to lead this board," Grambo said during the nomination. “I’m quite excited about the role I’m about to play,” Wheeler …
