Orb won the first leg of the Triple Crown Saturday, making up major ground in the home stretch to win the Kentucky Derby.
Orb, a thoroughbred with Maryland ties, won the Kentucky Derby Saturday, setting up a potential homecoming story later this month at the Preakness. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Orb began well back in the 20-horse field, before closing very strong in the home stretch. "I was really far back," Rosario told NBC. "I said hopefully he can go faster than that. I was saying maybe I was too far back, but it was so easy." See video of the race on NBCSports.com. The horse is owned by northern Baltimore County resident Stuart S. Janney, an executive with a New York-based financial firm, according to The Sun. Orb's father, Malibu Moon, is owned by Bel Air's Pons family of Country Life Farm, The Sun reported last month. The winning time was 2:02.89, as Orb…

The Upper Cheapeake Bay Athletic Conference includes teams from Harford and Cecil counties.
Rivalries add depth to the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference. But, according to one official, fights among rivals are rare. A rivalry between Fallston and North Harford's varsity lacrosse teams was solidified earlier this month when a fight broke out during a game. Video of the altercation was posted to YouTube.com following the April 12 varsity boys game at North Harford. The video is attached to this article. Ken Zorbach, supervisor of athletics with Harford County Public Schools, confirmed there was a fight at the game. "It's been dealt with," Zorbach said. Zorbach explained he could not go into detail about disciplinary actions taken by the school. He said the two schools are sports rivals, but fights at school sporting events …

Proceeds from the 2013 Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree help wounded veterans.
Don't be surprised to see a fleet of kayakers with fishing poles this weekend in Susquehanna State Park. The Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree is coming to Havre de Grace, April 18 to 21. During the event, fishermen and fisherwomen will paddle around the Susquehanna River in search of striped bass, catfish, large mouth bass and other catches. The event is less a tournament and more a celebration of the sport, which is why organizers say they call it a "jamboree." Registration is $50, and funds generated by the event will go to Heroes on the Water (HOW), a program which helps rehabilitate wounded veterans through kayak fishing.
