Longshot Oxbow Wins Preakness Stakes

Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished fourth.

Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. Havre de Grace defeated Perryville, 5-4, with a thrilling finish Wednesday at Stancill Field.

The tying run rounded third base and was halfway home, but the Havre de Grace baseball team was already celebrating Wednesday. After senior left fielder Bobby Smith's diving catch finished off classmate Christian Glassman's complete game, the Warriors enjoyed a dogpile in shallow left field. They'd earned it. The Warriors rallied to break the tie in the top of the seventh, and Glassman closed out the win in the bottom half of the frame as the Warriors advanced with a 5-4 win against Perryville at Stancill Field. The victory avenged a pair of regular season losses to the Panthers, and puts the Warriors in Friday's region final. Havre de Grace pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh courtesy of some small-ball tactics that …
