Thursday was an evening of celebration and reflection for Harford Community College and its 2013 graduating class. This was the first class to graduate in the new Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union Arena on campus. "Harford Community College continues to be a great resource for our community," Lyle Sheldon, president and CEO of Upper Chesapeake Health, said during his commencement address. Sheldon said the Class of 2013 ranges in age from 17 to 68. "I congratulate you on investing in yourself," Sheldon said. Sheldon also encouraged the Class of 2013 to "live personally" by being thoughtful and intentional in everything the do, to volunteer and give back to the community that has nurtured them.

Unpredictable weather has pushed back the Havre de Grace High School jazz band's performance.
The Jazz by the Bay concert, scheduled for Thursday evening, was postponed due to impending storms. It has been rescheduled for May 29. During the annual event, the Jazz Ensemble from Havre de Grace High School performs on the Promenade. The show has been a tradition since 1995, according to Band Director Rick Hauf. "It is designed to be an enjoyable way to end our year with a concert in a truly beautiful setting," Hauf said. See last year's Jazz by the Bay performance. Jazz by the Bay will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, on the Promenade near the Decoy Museum.

A by-the-numbers look at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference's performance in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association postseason tournament.
Five Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference teams will compete Tuesday in hopes of continuing their quests for a state championship. Two of them will square off for a state title. Conference Commissioner Bob Slagle offered a glimpse at the numbers behind the conference's postseason success: Region champions, according to Slagle, included: "Perryville boys and girls track, Harford Tech girls track, Edgewood boys track, Fallston boys and girls lacrosse, Bo [Manor] and Bel Air baseball, Patterson Mill boys lacrosse, CMW girls lacrosse and Perryville softball." Tuesday will be a busy day for some of those teams. Fallston and Patterson Mill meet in the Class 2A/1A boys lacrosse championship at 6 p.m. Tuesday at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville. …
The athletes from Havre de Grace High School will compete at Morgan State University.
Spring sports aren't over for five athletes from Havre de Grace High School. Ihuoma Okehie, Maddie Larrimore, Geno Nappi, Elliott Scott and Amy Kling have qualified for the state track championships, according to Warriors Athletics. The department wished them congratulations and said: "Good luck next weekend at states!!!" via the Warriors Athetlics Facebook page. The state track championships will be May 23 to 25 at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

The MPSSAA state finals are being held this week in lacrosse, baseball and softball.
The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference will be guaranteed of at least one trophy returning to Harford and Cecil counties, as five teams compete in the MPSSAA baseball, softball and lacrosse state tournaments. Fallston and Patterson Mill meet in the Class 2A/1A boys lacrosse championship at 6 p.m. Tuesday at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville. Also competing this week are the Bel Air and Bo Manor baseball teams, and the Perryville softball team. They'll play in state semifinals on Tuesday with hopes of reaching the state finals later this week. Bel Air plays North Hagerstown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Anne Arundel County. Havre de Grace defeated Perryville, 5-4, with a thrilling finish Wednesday at Stancill Field.
The tying run rounded third base and was halfway home, but the Havre de Grace baseball team was already celebrating Wednesday. After senior left fielder Bobby Smith's diving catch finished off classmate Christian Glassman's complete game, the Warriors enjoyed a dogpile in shallow left field. They'd earned it. The Warriors rallied to break the tie in the top of the seventh, and Glassman closed out the win in the bottom half of the frame as the Warriors advanced with a 5-4 win against Perryville at Stancill Field. The victory avenged a pair of regular season losses to the Panthers, and puts the Warriors in Friday's region final. The Warriors and Panthers meet in a Class 1A region semifinal Wednesday afternoon.
This time around, the Warriors are hoping to have a one-run advantage when the game ends. After two close contests in the regular season, the Havre de Grace and Perryville softball teams clash Wednesday in a winner-take-all battle in the Class 1A North region semifinals in Cecil County. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Perryville High School. Havre de Grace is looking to avenge two regular season defeats at the hands of Perryville—which defeated the Warriors, 2-1 and 8-7 in April contests. Barbara P. Canavan has been working for the school system for decades.
Three months after announcing that Superintendent Robert Tomback was leaving the school system, the Harford County Board of Education has named his temporary successor. On May 13, Harford County Public Schools issued a statement revealing that the school board has selected Barbara Canavan as the interim superintendent. Canavan will serve a one-year term as interim superintendent from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. “Mrs. Canavan is celebrating 40 years of dedicated service and commitment to the students and staff of Harford County Public Schools as a teacher, administrator and executive director,” Harford County Board of Education President Rick Grambo said in the statement. The Warriors-Panthers rivalry comes to a head at 4 p.m. at Perryville High School.
On Monday afternoon, Perryville High School will host the UCBAC girls lacrosse regional semifinals. The Havre de Grace Warriors will face off against the Lady Panthers at 4 p.m. The Warriors are seeded fourth in the UCBAC, CecilDaily.com reported, and the Panthers' last victory against them was in 2009. Perryville (10-1) is a top seed in the UCBAC 2A-1A south region, according to Panthers coach Mary Dunman. The Panthers advanced in the playoffs most recently by defeating North East 14-5.
