As a wedding and portrait photographer I love being able to document special moments in peoples lives, but I've always felt a tug on my heart to do more. For the last several years it's been a big goal goal of mine to be able to use my photography to tell a story, a big story, a story of making a difference in the lives of others. I have a felt a compulsion to be able to use my photography to help raise an awareness and document change. And just recently the perfect opportunity presented itself.
I have worked quite a few times with Extreme Makeover Home Edition as a family portrait photographer ... It was through the show that I was able to create photos for some beautiful families, meet my amazing fiancé Tony, and make some wonderful new friends. During one of the last episodes, I was introduced to Art Feeds, a non-profit in Joplin, Missouri. Their cause: mobilizing creative healing through art therapy. I found out that Art Feeds was taking their art programs overseas to Ghana, West Africa and they were partnering with 2 other non-profits to build an art center. Amazing, right?!! I longed for the opportunity to be a part of this type of endeavor.
Since then, three of our friends, Kim, Veronica & Christian (all very talented designers from EMHE) formed Go Team Ghana which (combined with the non-profits Art Feeds Touch A Life + Connor's Song) have plans to design and build an art center in Ghana, West Africa. An art center that will change the lives of children who have been rescued from child slavery. Children who are learning, some for the first time, how to be kids and dream big. Children who are being empowered through the freedom of expression.
Please Please Please stop right here for a minute and watch This Video : Drawn from the Water .. I could never, ever find the words to explain this project as beautifully and eloquently as this video does. The video 'Drawn from the Water' was created by Anthem Pictures www.anthempictures.tv
Two weeks ago our friends at Go Team Ghana reached out to my fiancé Tony and I to see if we would take part in the building and documenting of the project ..
and of course, we said YES!!!!
So at the end of December this year we are flying out to help build the "Connor's Creative Art Center" in Ghana, West Africa. Tony will help build the desks, chairs, shelves and storage for the inside of the art center and I will be documenting the entire process as well as the children that we have the honor of helping.
Between now and Oct 1st we are working hard to help raise funds for the art center. All of the funds will be used to fill a shipping container with furniture and supplies for the Art Center and ship it overseas to Ghana as well as to send the design team back to Ghana for 10 days to bring the Art Center to life.
