Havre de Grace the Horse for Sale

The award-winning mare named for the city heads for auction in November.

Havre de Grace the horse will be available for purchase next month.

"This reigning Horse of the Year can be yours," according to a Youtube video posted by horse sales agency Taylor Made.

The thoroughbred, who won Horse of the Year for 2011 and was named for the city in Harford County, will be the second Horse of the Year ever to be sold at public auction, according to Daily Racing Form.

Havre de Grace's current owner, Rick Porter of Delaware, purchased the horse for $380,000 as a yearling in 2008, reported ESPN. He would not disclose the asking price for the Nov. 5 auction in Kentucky where she will be sold.

Porter told Patch he named Havre de Grace after the city due to its ties to horse racing history.

"I know they had a first-class race track, and I've been through Havre de Grace many times," owner Rick Porter told Havre de Grace Patch in 2010.

Havre de Grace was home to The Graw, the one-mile track located on what is now the National Guard. In operation from 1912 to 1950, The Graw hosted legendary thoroughbreds like Man o' War, War Admiral, and Seabiscuit.

Havre de Grace the horse retired due to an ankle injury in spring 2012. She earned more than $2.5 million on the racetrack, reported Daily Racing Form. She will be available for purchase Nov. 5 at the Fasig-Tipton auction in Kentucky.

Associate Regional Editor Sean Welsh contributed to this report.
