Havre de Grace Family Gears Up for Super Bowl

Rob and Karen Smith have the Ravens logo on their lawn and are planning a New Orleans-themed menu for party Sunday.

When it’s game time, Rob and Karen Smith’s house is the place to go for those on "The Garth."

The couple lives on Brian Garth in Bayview Estates, where 14 neighbors converge to watch the Baltimore Ravens each week during football season.

In a living room painted purple, walls plastered with Ravens ticket stubs and autographed pictures, they come together for "indoor tailgating," a tradition the Smiths say has continued for the past few years.

"I call it the unofficial Ravens Roost of Havre de Grace," Karen Smith said.

Each game has a themed menu that has something to do with the opposing team. When the Ravens played the Pittsburgh Steelers, Karen Smith made “Ben’s Broken Ribs.” For the AFC Championship game on Jan. 12, she made orange crush cake since one of the Denver Broncos' team colors was orange. She and her husband text around the theme for the week in advance, and neighbors bring dishes accordingly.

"Everybody contributes," she said. "It's a group effort."

After the Ravens beat the Broncos, Karen Smith said she wanted to do something more. Her cousin had a local artist paint a Disney character on the lawn for a birthday party a few years back. "I said, 'If we win today, then I'll call him," she said.

One day on her lunch break, Karen Smith arranged for the artist from Grass Graphics to come out and paint the lawn in Havre de Grace.

All she had to do was figure out when her husband wouldn't be around. She said the weather and his schedule made it a challenge. There was rain, and there was the fact that Rob Smith's schedule as an equipment technician was sometimes unpredictable. But she did it.

"I was surprised," Rob Smith said, when he arrived home on Jan. 18 to find the Ravens logo there to greet him on the grass. Now, he said, all he has to do is make sure it stays intact for the Super Bowl. "I'm covering it with a tarp if I have to."
