Four hundred Harford County women will receive breast cancer screenings and education thanks to a grant from the Baltimore Ravens and the National Football League (NFL).
In an NFL program with the American Cancer Society to provide outreach in underserved communities, Harford County was found to be “high-need” based on its high breast cancer incidence and mortality, according to the American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society pointed to Harford County’s rural character and growing Hispanic and minority population as reasons why the need for health care outreach and access are increasing.
The Ravens and NFL donated $50,000 to provide breast cancer screenings, mammograms and education for hundreds of Harford County women.
Upper Chesapeake Health in Havre de Grace will offer breast cancer awareness services, including conducting 300 mammograms, for women who meet specific income requirements, reside in Harford County, are at least 40 years old and are uninsured or underinsured.
Harford County is the second-highest county surrounding NFL markets where breast cancer screening disparities are greatest, according to a statement from the Ravens.
“We are proud that the NFL is investing in Maryland to support women’s health,” said Gloria Crockett, vice president of the American Cancer Society in Maryland, in a statement. “The American Cancer Society has a mission to ensure access to mammograms for women, and thanks to the NFL Crucial Catch program and Upper Chesapeake Health, we will be able to increase the fight against breast cancer in Harford County.”
