DON OSMAN
For years, his home voicemail recording informed callers that they "have reached the Land of Oz."
In Havre de Grace, Don Osman is like a wizard, working magic through volunteerism, opening avenues paved with golden yellow bricks for people in need.
The retired English teacher has remained in the community, and continues to be just as active in retirement as he was during his 32-year tenure at Havre de Grace High School.
Osman remains committed to various volunteer activities, most notably through —the student volunteer organization, which stands for Service Makes Individual Lives Extra Special, that he founded and continues to oversee.
Through S.M.I.L.E.S., Osman is involved in providing for the less fortunate in the community.
"Not only was he a great English teacher but he is a very caring person," said Patti Gonzalez, a former student and S.M.I.L.E.S. volunteer. "Mr. Osman is just an all around great teacher and person."
Osman spent the last few years serving as the area's representative to the Harford County Public School Board. He retired from that post this summer.
He presented diplomas at Havre de Grace High School's . The street that leads to the teacher's parking lot at the school was .
Osman taught many Havre de Grace residents—as well as —and remains a mentor and uplifting presence to residents he's touched.
When he's not volunteering in town, Osman can often be found spending his mornings at . The coffee shop's owner, Shalonn Lawson, said she doesn't know of anyone in Havre de Grace who has anything but glowing remarks to share about Osman.
"He's wonderful. He's one of the most giving people that I know," Lawson said. "He gives through organizations, through the church. He's just a very giving person."
He continues to provide a book scholarship to graduating seniors at Havre de Grace High School.
Osman's influence on the youth in the city will impact generations—hopefully for many generations to come.
