HHS Band Needs Help For Disney Trip

The Havre de Grace High music department heads to Florida next month.

This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

They'll perform in Epcot Center, Downtown Disney and march in a parade down Main Street in Disney World.

Others will get a chance to perform a song for a Disney movie soundtrack, then witness it played within the movie in real time.

Approximately 200 Havre de Grace High School students will board a plane next month for a few days in Disney World with the Havre de Grace Music Department.

But barring some help, three or four students might end up staying in Havre de Grace.

"We would need about $3,000 to ensure every kid can go," director of bands Rick Hauf told Patch Wednesday.

"We’ve been very blessed with great support. We’ve raised over $20,000, and that’s all being spent on students with financial assistance," Hauf said. "As of now, those kids aren’t going, because we don’t have money. I can always add more kids."

Most of the students are paying their own way. Others indicated early in the process that they would need financial help, and they have been granted assistance through fundraising.

A few students, though, are now in need of assistance.

Hauf said the lone fundraiser remaining for the music department is the March 24 spring craft show.

Those interested in donating may also write a check to Havre de Grace High School, with "Orlando trip" on the note line, Hauf said.

"It would mean a lot. It’s $1,000 for each kid to go on this trip," he said.

"Several people just sponsored a child. Most of the kids are paying at least half. That’s just where we are right now: that’s the economy," Hauf said. "We want everyone that wants to go to be able to go."

The marching band will perform in a Main Street parade. The orchestra will perform on an outdoor stage in Downtown Disney. The chorus is performing at Epcot Center. The jazz band will perform, too, but Hauf didn't have a specific location Wednesday afternoon.

Each group will take part in a workshop with professional Disney musicians, Hauf said.

"They'll be getting music they've never seen before," Hauf said.

The group departs March 29 and returns April 1.

"We’re taking just over 200 students," Hauf said. "It’s a school of 700, that’s almost a third of the student body. It’s remarkable."

I know what it's like because my dad lost his job twice when I was in school thanks to plant shut downs back home. It feels awful to be left behind! If anyone reading this is able to spare a few a few dollars, send it in and we can help these kids. I know not everyone can with the economy being what it is.

I am an HHS alumni and our trip to Disney was fantastic. It truly is once in a lifetime and i still remember all the work that we did to get ready for the trip. Marching in that parade made it all worth it though. These kids will never forget their trip to Disney. I know it is one of my fondest high school memories so please if u can spare it donate a few dollars.
