Tydings Bridge Foundation Repair Begins Saturday

Underwater repairs will be done this weekend on the bridge carrying Interstate 95 over the Susquehanna River.

Motorists can expect some additional traffic and construction-related noise when traveling Interstate 95 over the Millard E. Tydings Memorial Bridge this weekend.

Underwater repairs to the bridge's foundation will be carried out from 7 a.m. on Saturday to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Work may also be performed the following weekend, Aug. 18-19.

According to a statement from the Maryland Transportation Authority, the construction "is part of a preservation project to perform underwater foundation (concrete piers/bridge supports) repairs to the Tydings Bridge and is necessary to the structural integrity of the bridge piers."

The $43 million project—which is similar to the underwater project that began on the Hatem Bridge in April—should be complete by late 2013.

Interesting that the Maryland Transportation Authority is making this announcement right now. Work started on the underwater repairs to the Tydings Bridge pilings about a year ago. They've been building coffer dams, installing reinforcing, pouring concrete, etc. since last fall.
