Harford County has agreed to pay more than $300,000 to put the finishing touches on Harris Stadium, on top of $1.134 million it originally provided for the project.
Harford County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Cornell Brown said the $313,770 appropriation from the county would cover the costs of brick entryway paving, flagpoles, a concrete pad and planter and fencing for the field house at Havre de Grace High School.
The school board requested the funding to finish work at Harris Stadium, which is incomplete, after the bid came in above projected costs.
Over the last decade, Havre de Grace residents say they have raised $1 million for the project.
"We provided the scoreboard, lights, away bleachers, ticket booth and home grandstand with pressbox through our hard work and the donations of many former graduates, local businesses and the city of Havre de Grace," Rich Holly, treasurer of Community Projects of Havre de Grace, told Patch.
With fewer donations in recent years, the community asked the county for assistance.
In 2010, the Harford County Parks and Recreation Department funded the installation of turf fields at Harris Stadium, according to The Record.
Then the school system requested $1.134 million from the county to finish work surrounding the fields, and with the most recent recent approval, it looks like Harris Stadium might finally come together.
On Nov. 20, the County Council threw its support behind a resolution granting $313,770 to the Harford County Board of Education for use at Havre de Grace High School's athletic facilities. The estimated time of completion for the stadium was not immediately available.
