Dog Rescued from Seneca Avenue Blaze

A Havre de Grace police officer also helped an older resident escape the adjacent home, according to a fire official.

A house fire broke out on Seneca Avenue Saturday morning in Havre de Grace, drawing 60 firefighters to respond and resulting in the rescue of a dog, according to Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst.

Hurst said someone called 911 and hung up, and when police called back, the person answered and said the house was on fire.

Crews were dispatched at 11:21 a.m. for a working dwelling fire in the 100 block of Seneca Avenue, according to Harford County Fire & EMS spokeswoman Jennifer Chenworth Price.

Smoke and fire were showing from the front of the house when firefighters arrived, Hurst said.

Nobody was inside the home—which was a duplex on Seneca Avenue—because the residents had already evacuated, according to Hurst. However, first responders did rescue a dog from inside the burning home, which firefighters treated for several minutes before turning the animal over to the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps for further medical care, Hurst added.

Crews from Susquehanna Hose, Level and Aberdeen fire companies brought the fire under control within approximately 10 minutes, Hurst said.

An officer from the Havre de Grace Police Department helped an older resident get out of the adjacent house, according to Hurst.

Hurst said Seneca Avenue was closed as first responders cleared the scene, and the road had reopened by 12:30 p.m.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of the fire as of Saturday afternoon, Hurst said.

Prayers to them. Very sad anytime but especially around the holidays no matter who it is or what type of people they are. Helping the oldest daughter with some clothes today. Not much, but anything anyone can donate at this point Im sure would help and be appreciated. Wendy, maybe you can get sizes and post them. Prayers for the furbaby as well. The Vet should be asked if they will permit a gofundme account to be set up for people to donate to the dogs bill. Homeowners ins should cover majority of the materialistic things, sad about the memoriabilia they both lost of passed loved ones, but atleast they still have their lives and memories! Are the other animals in safe places?
wendy jamison December 09, 2013 at 10:39 AM
Yea all the animals are in a safe place..thats a good idea about the vet bill for the dog.im gonna see what i can do.its just so sad that everything is gone.
