A 42-foot pleasure boat had gone up in flames as a result of mechanical problems near Galena around 11 a.m., according to the Natural Resources Police.
The Hose Company sent its boat, Marine 552, out to the scene, where crews spent two and a half hours, its report stated. Due to a fuel spill, firefighters put a boom around the boat and they shot water over the deck, according to the report.
Police said the owner of the boat alerted authorities that smoke and flames were coming from the engine compartment, prompting him and his passenger to swim to shore.
The boat was a total loss, according to Natural Resources Police, which said that Maryland Department of the Environment was called to check for leaking fluids as well.
According to CecilDaily.com, other responding agencies included Cecilton and Galena fire companies.
