Randall P. Worthington Sr., local businessman and member of the , was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound suffered in a field in Churchville Wednesday, according to Harford County police.

"It appears to be accidental," Harford County public information officer  said of the shooting. Worrell also said that it appears the shot was fired from Worthington's own gun, that he was alone and that investigators found no signs of foul play.

She added Worthington was likely target shooting at the time and suffered a head wound which proved to be fatal.

Worthington, age 59, was found in a cornfield behind property in the 3200 block of Aldino Road in Churchville, she said. The victim's brother, John Worthington IV, former publisher of The Aegis newspaper, discovered Randall Worthington and called 911 at around 11 a.m.

While it is unclear whether Randall Worthington or his family owned the property where he was found, informatoin on a state website indicated Worthington owned Aquila Hall Farm which is located on Aldino Road.

Worthington lived in Havre de Grace, was a Harford County native and grew up in the Aldino area, according to a story on ExploreHarford.com.

The Harford County Liquor Control Board was scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon, but the meeting was canceled. The board office on Main Street was keeping busy on Thursday as one staff member said the activity helped take workers' minds off the tragedy.

In addition to his role on the liquor board, Worthington was a member of the state healthcare commission and owned York Insurances Services Inc. in Forest Hill, according to his profile on the commission website. On that same profile, it was noted Worthington owned Aquila Hall Farm.

Mr. Worthington was about to make a recommendation on the next hospital for Maryland, to be located in Montgomery County. His death is a major story. Once the family has time to grieve and the services are held, I hope Patch looks into what Mr. Worthington's decision was going to be. He was a very decent man. The same cannot be said of those he worked with in health care. My condolences to the family.

Are we sure it was an accident? Sound's pretty strange to go out by yourself and fatally shoot yourself. Either way, a sad story. My condolences to the family
