Two minors will be charged with arson in connection with the burning of a county-owned building off Whiteford Road Friday afternoon, the Office of the State Fire Marshal reported.

At 1:08 p.m. on Friday, the suspects broke a glass window in a Harford County Parks and Recreation Department building in the 1500 block of Whiteford Road, the report said. They set fire to various items, which they proceeded to throw through the window, according to the fire marshal's report.

The fire caused "significant damage" to the one-story brick building, which housed athletic equipment used by youth teams, the fire marshal reported.

The building was on the grounds of Dublin Elementary School, according to the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association, which reported the fire was placed under control within 10 minutes.

Approximately 25 firefighters from Darlington, Bel Air, and Whiteford responded to help extinguish the blaze in the 15-by-40-foot building, according to the fire marshal's report.

The fire was estimated to have caused more than $35,000 in damage, the report said. There were no reported injuries.

A team of investigators from the fire marshal's office identified two suspects—a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old—who will be charged with second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property, according to the report.

The suspects were released to the custody of their parents and will be referred to the Department of Juvenile Services for further action, according to the fire marshal.
