"At about 4:20 p.m., officers were called to the 700 block of Erie Street in reference to a fight in progress," Pfc. Jeff Gilpin, spokesman for the Havre de Grace Police Department, said.
"Our officers arrived in the area, [and] they were not able to locate any fight," Gilpin said.
"But through knocking on doors and speaking to neighbors in the area of Erie Street [and] Hoppers Lane, they ended up getting into a situation with a subject who was barricaded inside of a house," Gilpin said.
According to Gilpin, neighbors directed Havre de Grace police to a home in the 700 block of Erie Street, where officers were able to get inside without forcing entry.
People who had been in the residence left when officers arrived, with the exception of a man who had locked himself inside a room and would not come out, police said.
"It ended up being just those officers and the subject," Gilpin said, inside the home on Erie Street. Gilpin said it was not clear whether the subject lived there.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation because, according to Gilpin, police called the Harford County Crisis Negotiation Team and Harford County Special Response Team, agencies within the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
"One officer on the scene [from the Havre de Grace Police Department] was part of that Crisis Negotiation Team," Gilpin said. The officer began a dialogue with the man on the other side of the door, a conversation that Gilpin said continued when the Harford County team arrived, which included SWAT officers.
"At some point, the conversation ceased for whatever reason and officers could not reinitiate dialogue," Gilpin said.
"...the suspect ended up deceased," Gilpin said. "I am not sure the means or cause of death as of right now. We’re still investigating."
The scene cleared at 7:40 p.m. when the man was pronounced dead, Gilpin said.
Police said there was no threat in the area. "We strongly believe it was an isolated incident," Gilpin said. "There is no danger to the area."Stay with Patch for updates.
