After attempting to rob the 7-Eleven on North Union Avenue with a flashlight, a Havre de Grace man is facing charges, the Havre de Grace Police Department said.

At 5:17 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, an employee called 911 to report an attempted robbery at the 7-Eleven in the 500 block of Union Avenue, according to police.

A man had entered the convenience store, tried to pass a flashlight off as a weapon and demanded money, police reported.

When the clerk saw that the object was a flashlight, he told the man he was calling police, according to the report.

The suspect grabbed several gift cards and left on foot, police said.

As officers were doing routine checks hours later, they saw a man they had identified as the flashlight carrier, and he began running away, according to Pfc. Jeff Gilpin, spokesman for the Havre de Grace Police Department.

After a brief foot pursuit near Bourbon Street and Freedom Lane, police took Jamar Terrel Coleman, 24, of the 400 block of Battery Drive, into custody, the report stated.

Coleman was charged with robbery, theft less than $100 and unauthorized removal of property. He was being held at the Harford County Detention Center and had a preliminary hearing in Harford County District Court scheduled for Jan. 13.

Dummy. The gift cards have to be activated at the register to be valid.
