Havre de Grace Ducks Set To Dunk in January

A local version of the Polar Bear Plunge will debut in 2012.

Polar bears plunge at Sandy Point Park. A few miles up the Chesapeake Bay in Havre de Grace, ducks dunk.

The Susquehanna Hose Company is hosting the first ever Duck Dunk in 2012, a fundraiser that will see participants raise money and "dunk" into the frigid winter water at the .

The event will take place Jan. 21 at the newly-refurbished boat launch ramp located at the foot of .

Dunkers pay $35 to participate. They are asked to seek donations (see form with this article).

The event is being run in partnership with . The original plan called for the dunk to take place at the cove just north of the waterfront restaurant. But in September changed those plans, as silt settled on the riverbed.

"There's no way you could go in the water there, it's too muddy," Susquehanna Hose Company Chief said.

Hurst said will provide a breakfast the morning of the event, and a pre-dunk party the night before.

A number of corporate sponsors have already been secured. There are four levels of sponsorship being offered to local businesses, Hurst said.

A tent will be set up with heaters and refreshments for the dunkers. Hurst said the number of dunks in the event will depend on the turnout. He's hopeful for strong participation, but realistic in the hopes that the event will snowball in future years.

"We'll have 50 to 100 people the first year and hopefully grow it from there," Hurst said.

The event has been . The city's no swimming rule will be lifted for the event, and rescue personnel will be on hand.

Paying to participate or a minimum to raise to participate? In this economy if you have someone willing to dunk in January allow it...as for the T-shirts...if people want them let them pay for them outside the donations. If we want as much of a turnout as possible and the publicity that will go with it...then we need to make a big splash (pun intended) and putting a minimum donation in order to participate just doesn't seem right....

Did you read the same article I did or happen to check the website. They are trying to raise funds for your local fire department you know those men and women who leave thier families when you call 911! And they say you can get sponsors for the $35 3 friends give you 10 another 5 there you have it. I usually do the MSP Polar bear plunge they ask for more than that. My brother is a volunteer fireman I'm going to the duck dunk for him and his SHCO family. Maybe next time you want to criticize maybe you could pick on someone doing bad things not our local heroes. As for the economy how do YOU think they pay for firetrucks not all funds come from local or state governments it's called FUNDRAISERS!!!
