Vernon Jones of Jones Junction Passed Away at 88

He reportedly ran the largest family-owned car dealership in Maryland.

The Bel Air man who headed up the largest family-owned car dealership in Maryland passed away this week.

Vernon L. Jones, 88, died peacefully at home on June 16, according to his obituary.

Born in North Carolina in 1925, Jones moved with his family to Maryland when he was 12 and later left school to enlist in the Navy during World War II, his obituary stated.

In 1947, he married Catherine Marie Hash, and in 1950, the couple purchased the car dealership that Jones' father owned in Conowingo. They moved the business to Bond Street in Bel Air in 1965, then relocated in 1973 to Belair at Harford roads, where it has been ever since, the obituary said. At first, the business was called "Jones Plymouth," the dealership reported.

It got the name "Jones Junction" after Bel Air radio and TV star Bob Callahan named it for its location at the intersection of US Route 1 and MD Route 147, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Today, Jones Junction employs 600 people and is the largest family-owned dealership in Maryland, the obituary stated.

Vernon Jones' son Larry told The Baltimore Sun that his father emphasized the importance of treating people well, statying: "'You're not in the car business, you're in the people business—the people who work for you and the people who come through the door.'"

Over the years, Vernon Jones expanded the family business to six dealerships with 10 different franchises, according to a statement from Jones Junction, which said his passion for automobiles and spirit of service resulted in his becoming "a staple in the Harford County area, where today his business donates to over 20 local schools and charities."

Jones was survived by his wife, sister, three children, grandchildren and many family and friends. A funeral service was held June 19 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Cards to the family may be addressed to Catherine Jones, 128 West Ring Factory Rd., Apt. 1371, Bel Air, MD 21014. In lieu of flowers, people may send memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.
