New Toll Rates Go Into Effect Tuesday

The toll increases impact the Hatem and Tydings bridges over the Susquehanna River.

At 12:01 Tuesday morning, the Maryland Transportation Authority increased the tolls at a number of facilities statewide, including the Hatem and Tydings bridges over the Susquehanna River.

Commuters paying cash now will owe $6, rather than $5, when crossing into Cecil County.

The Hatem Bridge AVI decals can be utilized through Sept. 30, 2012, as the MdTA transitions to an E-ZPass transponder

The transponders are available to Hatem Bridge commuters in two options.

The first option is a "Hatem Use Only" pass. The pass will only be valid at the Hatem Bridge toll plaza, and it allows unlimited trips for one year in a two-axle vehicle for a flat rate of $10. The price will go up to $20 on July 1, 2013.

The transponders will be free through Jan. 31, 2013, and no statements, prepaid deposit or administrative fees will be assessed.

The second plan provides access to all toll facilities, and fees from the tolls at those facilities would apply. It will be available Feb. 1, 2012 for $10 for unlimited trips in a two-axle vehicle. The price will increase to $20 on July 1, 2013.

The plan can be added to an existing or new Maryland E-ZPass plan. A prepaid deposit is required, and a credit card would be charged for yearly renewal.

A new transponder would cost $9 under the statewide option.

What isn't made clear in anything that I have read is the second option and whether we are charged $5 for the crossing each time or if it falls under the flat rate. I don't think we were well looked after - I think that our state senator just rattled her sword and pounded her fist and we still got screwed. Smoke and mirrors. I for one am done with it. Can't wait for the next elections.

I hope all the liberals that voted omalley back in enjoy it. You all had your chance. He's raising gas agian and mva fees too. Enjoy
Tom Barnes November 02, 2011 at 11:52 AM
O'Malley didn't create the recession we are in. 1 unwarranted war and 1 justifiable war where billions are being spent of OUR money got us into the mess. That and Bush/Chaney Wall Street thugs. History can't be rewritten to serve any particular political party in this mess.
Nick November 02, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Give me a break Tom! You can't blame the wars for our current economic problems at the state level. How about putting the blame where it belongs, right on O'Malley. You cannot keep spending money you don't have on things you want. It's really that simple. Our Democrat lead congress combined with the ultra liberal policies of the O'malley administration have resulted in our overspending. He has raised taxes and fees every chance he has gotten and for what? And wall street thugs? Lets put that blame where it belongs too, Bill Clinton and Allen Greenspan, and the Obama. A free market is a great thing and I agree with Clinton's deregulation of wall street, but then when it fails you need to let it fail, not subsidize it with tax payer money. Thats not deregulation. It's just plain stupid.
Tom Barnes November 02, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Free market? Don't you mean crony capitalism? But that's not what this thread is about. I'm sure we could a lively debate, Nick, but not here.

Tom, Under the second option, you pay the $10.00 additional fee for the Hatem Bridge and you get unlimited crossings (2 axle vehicle) for one year. Also new now for all E-Zpass users the $1.50 monthly service charge will be waived each month if you used the E-Zpass at least 3 times at any of the Md.Toll Facilities (except Hatem Bridge) the previous month.
Joe McCarthy November 02, 2011 at 08:53 PM
Well macri as usual you cons just have to blame OMalley for all your problems. Your boy erlich still holds the record for the biggest tax,I mean fee, increase for everything in MD history! He raised all fees and said it was'nt a tax ,Yea right! 2nd the it has to be passed first before any increase and theres a lot of opposition to it now!
Joe McCarthy November 02, 2011 at 09:05 PM
Yea nick lets put blame where it belongs, ron reagan! First he took all the social money and put it in the general fund and then started complaining how social security is broke and the cons are still complaining now. Then he ran up a debt that took 20 years to pay down(oh yea by a Dem). Then it took your con boy wonder bush 8 years to kill a surplus and almost kill the economy! Yea its all Obamas fault! Check your history before dumping that load on us! Also theres not a con state doing better than MD so thank an Ultra Liberal for that!
Joe McCarthy November 02, 2011 at 09:07 PM
I did not see that Fred. So if its used 3 times no monthly fee? I'll take all I can get! Thanks for the info.
Nick November 02, 2011 at 11:56 PM
Thats funny. It's Reagan's fault our current state government overspends. Do you actually believe that? Really? Bush isn't my boy. I'm not a die hard republican. Just a realist. Omalley and Obama both are to blame for much of our current economic problems. Obama spent two trillion dollars between the stimulus and Obamacare, not to mention the bailouts that he gave. And you want to blame Bush and Reagan for the current financial woes. Give me a break. While I will be the first to point fingers at Bush's poor policies, I sure won't sit there and say that Obama has nothing to do with it all. Try to think for yourself instead of letting people like Rachael Maddow do it for you.

Thanks Fred. I appreciate the answer.
Tom Barnes November 03, 2011 at 12:04 AM
Nick - realist? And you think it takes only 2 years (now 2 1/2) to get into the economic mess we are in? Really? Oh boy. Okey dokey. BTW, the stim package? Bush wrote it before leaving office. Again, you cannot rewrite history.
Karl Schuub November 03, 2011 at 11:57 AM
If the fees were actually used to repair and maintain the bridge or tunnel I went through then that would be fair. That isn't the case; only those of us unlucky enough to work on the other side of whatever the structure might be are forced to subsidize the state. If you think the money goes to transportation issues let me point out that right now there a project to beautify the surrounds of a graveyard on Annapolis Rd in Baltimore City right next to where I work. I looked it up - it's being done with transportation money and it's on private property. I'm sure that's the tip of the iceberg as the corrupt government uses the transportation fund like it's there own private piggy bank. Pure corruption and they say they need more money...of course they do.
Nick November 03, 2011 at 03:00 PM
yeah right Tom. Find some proof of that and post it on here. Or maybe, just maybe, it was Pelosi and her cronies that wrote the bill. you can't change history Tom. And while I am not naive enough to think that two wars had nothing to do with our economic woes, I'm also not naive enough to think that it had everything to do with it. our current administration bears much of the responsibility as well. And Tom, 2 1/2 years is a long time. Long enough to have enacted economic reform that actually works. When will you extreme leftists learn that simply throwing money at your problems isn't always the answer? I am not a Bush fan. Nor am I a fan of Obama. What I am a fan of is enacting meaningful reform that will help our country turn around this economy. Our current administration is not getting the job done. You can't possibly believe they are.

No, Nick, you are just a bitter person bent on insulting whomever you can in anyway that you can. That, in my book, pretty much makes your comments obsolete and unworthy my personal time. I don't fight with people with anger issues. Sorry. You have yourself a good day.
Nick November 03, 2011 at 04:18 PM
Tom, how did I insult you and what in my post leads you to believe I have "anger issues"? I simply asked you to provide some sort of evidence for your claim. If I upset you I am sorry. You called me a bitter person. I find that insulting and yet I can find no insult in my posts at all. While we may not agree politically, i certainly welcome your opinions on the subject, I just ask for you to prove what you say. I can find no evidence to substantiate your claims and when I ask for it you get combative. There is no reason to resort to name-calling Tom.

I think you are all ignoring where the real blame should be placed. If our founding fathers never signed the declaration of independence, we wouldn't have the notion of states and countries to complain about and we could still be living happily under a monarch... I swear, every "adult" on this site sounds like a whiny child trying to tell uncle sam who started the fight.
Tom Barnes November 03, 2011 at 08:49 PM
My goodness Whip. You speak of the forefathers who whined so much they started a war... 'whining' is where change starts. ;)
