BLOG: We Don't Want to Lose Our Walmart!

Residents of Abingdon including Delegate Glen Glass do not want to lose their Walmart!

The recent plan of the Abingdon Walmart to close and move to Bel Air as a 24 hour Super Walmart has sparked a very loud debate among community residents and Harford County Government officials. I would like to take the time to explain my current position.

Abingdon is part of my district and I absolutely oppose this plan. It is very inconvenient for my constituents to have to drive to Bel Air to shop at Walmart especially when the current location is conveniently located off of I-95 and Rt. 24. Having made the drive myself, I can verify the rigors that they would encounter. The proposed Bel Air location is in a residential area near a school and will greatly increase the heavy traffic that currently exists in the area. Many people in Bel Air are opposed to the Walmart relocation and expansion and they are content to shop at the Falston Walmart. Currently there is a petition drive, which I have signed, that opposes Walmart’s plan. I have written letters to County Council Members and the Harford County Executive expressing my concerns. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this further. I would love to hear from you and your thoughts regarding this issue. You can email me at glen.glass@house.state.md.us or call my office at (410) 841-3280.

Sincerely,
Your Servant and Delegate Glen Glass

A little late to the party and not very forceful, but appreciated all the same.

Thank you for your support. We in the Bright Oaks development don't want to lose the ability to drive in and out of our community safely. We have been getting "robo" calls from WalMart asking if we are pro or con for the store to open right across the street from our development. We like WalMart but the location is WRONG and if anyone who commutes anywhere in the Bel Air South area thinks traffic is bad now, this is just the "tip of the iceberg " if the current plan goes through. It will affect many more people than just those neighboring communities. If Walmart were smart, they would realize all the bad press they will be getting if they relocate. It's such a shame that a success story like WalMart (the American Dream) is proving to be such a bullying nightmare. It doesn't say much for WalMart as a business that cares about the local community....quite the opposite. Why would any smart business go where they weren't wanted? Their founder, Sam Walton, would no doubt be as dismayed at this situation as we are. He was quoted as saying, "Each Wal-Mart store should reflect the values of its customers and support the vision they hold for their community." Pretty ironic, isn't it?

Does anyone know if there is a possibility of Sam's club going in next to the "new" Walmart Bel Air location?

Love all the politicians jumping in against a plan that cannot be stopped thanks to many of the same politicians (not Delegate Glass obviously) approving the zoning that allows the store to be built in the new location. Sort of like closing the barnyard gate after the horses run out. Unfortunately the time to stop this was a couple of years ago when the zoning was changed, but no one stood up to stop it except 1 group, Friends of Harford, which they were ignored by our wonderful County Executive who thinks it's OK to give away Taxpayer Money & tries to bully the BOE to build a new HdG High School & the County Council, who than approved the zoning change. This has been the problem with Harford County for 25 years, the developers seem to own the own the county & the politicians let them do what they want. Build housing developements, build Shopping Centers, that's OK, nevermind there is not infrastructure in pace to handle the increased population & traffic. The roads are not adequate & schools have had overcrowding issues. I example of not adequate roads is Rt. 22, which should be 2 lanes in each direction from Aberdeen to Bel Air, not just in Aberdeen & Bel Air. Poor planning & poor government.

the current location in Abingdon also results in an enourmous amount of traffic thru a residential neighborhood, Constant Friendship, and there is only one way in and one way out to the road on which Walmart presently sits (along with many other businesses)...has anyone forgotten what happened when we had the "big snows"? I live in between the current and proposed locations and would much rather drive 1 mile (approx 1-2 minutes) further and not deal with the 24/924/tollgate melee...the entire shopping complex near the Walmart in Abingdon was so poorly planned that I think it might have been done by a group of 10 yr olds

Jeff has hit the nail on the head. And I am sure Susan isn't the only person in Constant Friendship who feels the same way.

I believe that we can agree that getting into the wal mart area from 24/924 is a mess, but if they build this new wal mart is it going to be any less of a mess? It is probably going to be worse, since that area has less of the ability to support the large volume of people that will come. I agree with what Jeff has said, there has been too poor planning my county officials over the last thirty years, they have rushed to expand the sprawl and now we have to deal with it.
