UPDATE (Monday morning)—Harford County is under a winter storm warning until 2 p.m. Monday.

The area may receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, which reported snow will fall through early Monday afternoon.

A winter storm warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring, and people should only travel in cases of emergency, according to the weather service.

Public schools in Harford County are closed on Monday.

Original report on Sunday

St. Patrick's Day may just bring a pot of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Harford, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick and Howard counties, effective from 7 p.m. Sunday to 2 p.m. Monday.

The advisory calls for 2 to 5 inches of snow, which will start as a rain-snow mix early Sunday evening and change to all snow by late Sunday night.

"...accumulating snow will most likely impact our area after 9 p.m.," Harford County Emergency Manager Rick Ayers said in a message Sunday.

The heaviest snow will be midnight to Monday morning, the National Weather Service reported, noting that roads will be slippery. A winter weather advisory means periods of snow will cause travel difficulties, and people should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities.

"The morning rush hour will most likely be impacted by this storm," said Ayers, who asked people to plan accordingly.

Temperatures will drop to the twenties overnight and stay below freezing on Monday, according to Ayers.
