Aaron Thompson has been witness to a lot as Havre de Grace's swim coach. Monday offered a first. The Warriors swim team defeated Fallston for the first time in more than 20 years. The boys, girls and the overall score all fell in Havre de Grace's favor in a dual meet at North Harford Middle School. "It's never happened," Thompson said. "It feels amazing. I've been doing this for 20 years." The Warriors won the overall meet, 187-153, behind a clutch performance from the girls team, which defeated the Cougars, 94-76. The Havre de Grace boys basketball team won at home for the first time this year, defeating North East, 63-48, Thursday at Havre de Grace High School. The Warriors improved to 2-2. Sophomore Lavelle McCullers scored 24 points to lead Havre de Grace to the win. He added nine rebounds. Ben Richardson had 15 points for the Warriors. The Warriors defeated Rising Sun, 77-60, on the road in the season opener before dropping home games to Harford Tech and Joppatowne. Six Havre de Grace seniors will participate in Sunday's UCBAC all-star showcase football game. Linemen Tyler Coakley, Andy Meiselwitz and Robbie Orzewicz, fullback/linebacker Terrell Boothe and wide receivers James Smith and Chris Askew will play for the North Team in the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bel Air High School. The North Team is made up of seniors from Aberdeen, Bo Manor, Elkton, Havre de Grace, North East, North Harford, Perryville and Rising Sun. The Warriors swim season kicks off Tuesday night, and Havre de Grace's coaches have high hopes for their team. The Warriors' combined boys' and girls' record was 9-4 in 2010-2011, with the boys' freestyle relay team claiming a state title. A bulk of the Warriors swimmers return for this season, and according to coaches Aaron Thompson and Meredith Garback, this year's squad is "the largest and most balanced team in recent history." Katie Bubb and David Beck can add a couple more accolades to their resumes. Bubb, the 2011 homecoming queen, and Beck, the 2010-2011 athlete of the year, were named the top Warriors athletes of the fall season during Thursday's fall sports awards ceremony at Havre de Grace High School. Bubb and Beck were each top performers on Warriors volleyball teams this season. Beck even led the Warriors boys team to an undefeated season and a Harford County championship. The Warriors and a bus full of fans traveled to Glen Burnie Saturday night for the Class 1A state semifinal. Defending state champions Mountain Ridge defeated Havre de Grace, 2-1, at North County High School. Havre de Grace's goal was scored by Gabe Larrimore. The game was physical and often interrupted by fouls and whistles from the referee (see video). Havre de Grace loses three seniors: David Amici, Ryan Bastian and Chris Worrell. Havre de Grace travels to Glen Burnie Saturday night for a Class 1A state semifinal boys soccer game. The Warriors and Mountain Ridge square off at 7:30 p.m. at North County High School in Glen Burnie (directions via Mapquest). The Warriors athletic department also scheduled a fan bus, which will depart from Havre de Grace High School at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Seats on the bus are $10 for round-trip transportation. A year after steamrolling through the regional playoffs en route to the Class 1A state championship game, Havre de Grace limped into this year's playoffs. The Warriors lost the final four games of the regular season, and five of the last six. Havre de Grace—the only team with a losing record participating in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association at 4-6—visits Perryville at 7 p.m., Friday. Havre de Grace boys soccer fans can ride together to the Class 1A state semifinal Saturday, and they can dress alike, too. Havre de Grace High School's Varsity Club is selling seats on a fan bus and t-shirts supporting the Warriors for $10 each. The fan bus will depart Havre de Grace High School at 5:45 p.m., Saturday. A minimum of 30 people must be confirmed by Friday at 3 p.m., in order to hold the bus for the trip. Students must turn in a parental permission slip, and parents who wish to ride the bus can reserve a spot by calling 410-939-6600 by 3 p.m., Friday. The trip costs $10. Shirts—…
Havre de Grace boys soccer defeated Sparrows Point in penalty kicks Tuesday night to win the Class 1A North region championship. The victory came in a 5-4 shoot-out session, capped by Brad Davidson's game-winner, igniting a celebration reportedly heard in other parts of the city. Brad Davidson's routine is to pause for 15 seconds before taking a penalty kick. So when the referee blew his whistle to admonish the Warriors defender for not approaching the ball quickly enough Tuesday night, Davidson said his concentration was broken. Sean Smith can still handle a soccer ball. But the Warriors boys soccer coach is juggling a lot more than a ball as his team contends for the Class 1A North region title. Smith's wife, Jen, is due to give birth to the couple's first child Monday—the day before Havre de Grace hosts Sparrows Point in the region final. If Jen passes the due date, Sean said the couple and their doctor would begin discussing an induction. Bobby Smith scored on a loose ball for the second straight game and the Warriors boys soccer team advanced to the Class 1A North region final with a 1-0 win against Perryville at James R. Harris Stadium Friday. Smith scored with 25 minutes remaining in the first half, heading home a header from Connor Haffey, who deflected a cross from David Amici. The Warriors will host Sparrows Point at 7 p.m. Tuesday at James R. Harris Stadium in the Class 1A North Region final. With a win, the Warriors would advance to the state semifinals.
