About this column:
Local sports reporter Jeff Seidel writes about Havre de Grace youth and rec sports every Saturday at Havre de Grace PatchThis may be the time that many sports fans are thinking about the college basketball tournaments and whether or not the Orioles might finally find some success. But for others in Havre de Grace, some of their thoughts are actually turning towards football. The Havre de Grace program in the Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League is getting ready for the 2011 season already. They have set up registration dates—starting in a few weeks—for their program this fall, hoping that their program is going to build upon last season's success. Brian Eberhardt is the program’s president, and he said that …
Tom Lloyd is the vice president of the Aberdeen Junior Wrestling program. He’s spent the last few seasons helping rebuild that organization. Now, Lloyd is about to undertake a similar project in Havre de Grace. Lloyd is going to be the head coach of the Havre de Grace Warriors Junior Wrestling program which should be starting next winter. He made the tough decision to step away from the very successful Aberdeen team to try and help start something from scratch, giving the high school the kind of feeder program it needs in wrestling. “Our goal is to get Havre de Grace to be aware that …
Josh Foy loves wrestling. The former Havre de Grace High School wrestler returned to coach the sport at his alma mater this winter despite working in a different field. Now, Foy is part of a group that’s helping to expand the sport even farther into the Havre de Grace community. Foy, Tommy Lloyd and Mike Lambert—all former Warrior wrestlers—are helping to establish a recreation wrestling program for children in the area. Foy said the group he’s working with is trying to get the program set up and running for next winter. It will be for children ages 6-14 and associated with Parks and …
Cheerleaders are present at many big sporting events in Havre de Grace, but what people don’t realize is how hard these girls work to put on their show. The Havre de Grace Recreation Cheerleaders make up a group of 48 girls ages 5-14. They work about 10 months a year to cheer at football and basketball games. They don’t just walk out there and jump up and down—these young ladies put in some time. Lisa Belcher is a Havre de Grace resident who serves as the communications director/treasure of this group. This is her fourth season with them, and Belcher takes pride in what they do to keep …
Mother Nature ruined the opening week of play in the for Havre de Grace basketball players—plus those in the rest of the Eastern Harford County Basketball League. The storm that dumped an inch or two of snow on Harford County on Friday caused school and recreation officials to cancel all games in the EHCBL for the weekend. That’s when the basketball program was set to start its winter season. The small storm affected schools and high school games in the area on Friday, and that’s why things were cancelled in places that day and over the weekend. League president Joe Schatz said the higher-ups…
The Havre de Grace youth basketball league starts with the New Year, but the adults will get a chance to play, too. The men's program, which will be more of an informal thing, begins play Jan. 9. There's a small group of players who have the chance to play for a few hours each weekend. Joe Schatz, who runs both the youth and adult programs, said the adults go on Sundays at the Activity Center. Games are played from 9 a.m. until noon with a group of 25 players having signed up earlier in the fall. Schatz said they try to get a bunch of games in during that three-hour period. Games go up to 13…
The recreation basketball season is about to begin in Havre de Grace. Kids from the Havre de Grace area will be playing in the Eastern Harford County Basketball League, and the various schedules there start after the first of the year. The regular season games will take place from January until early March. Playoffs are set to begin around the week of March 12 in the different age groups. Children ages 5-6 will be in an in-house league made up of all Havre de Grace teams, but kids 7-14 will play in the E.H.C.B.L.—much larger in size. Teams in the league are going to compete against different …
The Havre de Grace youth football teams all struck out in last weekend's Maryland state championship tournament. The Warriors put four teams in competition last weekend, but all of them came up empty in different rounds. One fell in the semifinals, and the rest lost in the quarterfinals, ending their season on disappointing notes. Offense was the big problem for Havre de Grace as the Warriors scored a total of eight points in the four games. They were shut out three times, although two of the games were close contests. Havre de Grace's 6-8 team suffered a tough 12-0 loss to Bowie in a …
The Havre de Grace recreation football program will be alive and kicking in the Maryland Youth Football state championship tournament this weekend. Four Havre de Grace teams earned invitations to the tournament, and each of them will begin play on Saturday with games in Harford County. The 6-8 team meets Bowie in a quarterfinal game at Tucker Field in Bel Air at 12:30 p.m. Also at Tucker Field, the 8-10 Warriors are scheduled to meet Poolesville (Montgomery County) in another quarterfinal at 2 p.m. The 10-12 Havre de Grace team also goes at Tucker Field Saturday for a quarterfinal match-up. …
The Jarrettsville 9-11 team is probably very glad it won't have to see Havre de Grace any more. Havre de Grace handled Jarrettsville twice during the regular season and didn't have much trouble the third time. The Warriors rolled to a 30-12 rout of Jarrettsville a few weeks ago in the Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League championship game at Havre de Grace High School. The Warriors improved to 11-1 this season with the title game victory. Their offense was difficult to stop because they can do a variety of things. Havre de Grace will run some Wing-T as well as the spread and the Jet. The …
The Havre de Grace Youth football program is going to be busy when the playoffs begin on Saturday. The Warriors have a total of six teams in the Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League semifinals—four of which are going to be at home—that are scheduled to take place Saturday. Havre de Grace will host four playoff games at the high school with two more of its teams on the road. The championship games are set for next weekend, and all of the league's divisions are going to take place at Havre de Grace. For this weekend, the 8-10 team has the first home game, playing at noon against Cecil County…
The Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League's first regular season is winding down, and the Havre de Grace program appears ready to be well-represented in the playoffs. HdG Football president Brian Eberhardt said that, of the seven teams the Warriors have in competitive leagues, it looks like six will make post-season play. Teams must finish in the top four of their divisions to make the playoffs. In addition, Havre de Grace could have at least five home games when the playoffs begin next weekend. But Havre de Grace is going to be very busy when the championships roll around on Nov…
The Havre de Grace Youth Football program is part of the new day that's dawning in Harford County. Football programs in this county were connected with a Baltimore County league for approximately 25 years. But now, Havre de Grace and the other Harford teams are on their own and in their first year of a new league. The Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League (UCYFL) began play this year with teams from programs in Havre de Grace, Aberdeen, Bel Air, Emmorton, Edgewood/Joppatowne plus another from Cecil County. "It's been a little bit bumpy, trying to get a new league off the ground, " Havre de …
