Every week Havre de Grace Patch recognizes a volunteer firefighter, police officer, emergency medical services employee or other community member.
Our Hero of the Week is Patrolman First Class Jeff Gilpin of the Havre de Grace Police Department. Gilpin, 28, is a community resource officer and the public information officer for the police. He joined the police force after serving in the military, with deployments in various countries in the Middle East and Africa. Gilpin and his wife had their first child, a boy, earlier this year. Every week Havre de Grace Patch will recognize a volunteer fire fighter, police officer or emergency medical services employee. Our Hero of the Week is Scott Hurst, fire chief of the Susquehanna Hose Company, the five-house all-volunteer fire company that serves Havre de Grace and the surrounding communities. Hurst oversees all five firehouses, but is also a professional firefighter in Prince George's County. He is a Ravens season ticket holder and a die-hard fan.   Our Hero of the Week is Teresa Walter, chief of the Havre de Grace Police Department. Walter, 51, has been police chief since July 2005. She began her career with the Harford County Sherrif's office in 1980, working there until the day before she took over in Havre de Grace. PATCH: What do you enjoy most about your job? CHIEF WALTER: Probably the people. Both the people that I work with and our citizens. This is a phenomenal community. It truly, truly is. It's a very close-knit community, very into volunteerism.
