BLOG: Team USA

In a few weeks, hundreds of dedicated athletes from across our country will travel to London to represent our great nation. They’ll compete, win medals and stand proudly as our national anthem plays and our stars and stripes waves high.

But they can’t do it alone.

The U.S. Olympic team receives no government funding and relies solely on corporate sponsorships and private donors.  This year, we all can help by buying a stitch on the American Flag that the team will take to London. Each stitch costs $12 and can be dedicated to anyone, anywhere. Katie and  I are buying a stitch and we hope you’ll join us. Click here to get yours today.

The Olympic Games are much more than just a sporting event. They are games that have united us as Americans and as a global community for hundreds of years. And this year, I know that Team USA will go all the way.

A special thanks to Governor Hickenlooper from Colorado for letting us know about this sponsorship program.

Good luck to all of the Olympians from Maryland. We’re proud of you.

Martin O'Malley is the Governor of Maryland. He writes a regular blog for his official website.

I don't get this. Mr. Phelps is worth how much? Twelve dollars to some people is their weekly food money.

One stitch from the governor and his wife, that's $24 from a family worth how much?

I would state looking at some new PR firms on some of these blogs your posting.

MOM (a term from the Sun Talk Board) is railing against the 1% types and yet with their million dollar endorsements his words ring shallow.

Buck, if I was the gov and I wrote this piece, I'd fire myself. Or if someone else wrote it they would be in stitches after seeing this in print.

All the millions NBC will make on corporate advertising you would think there would be a way for someone to pick up the tab instead of the regular folks who aren't fairing so well right at the moment.

You recently referred to me as making a raciest statement but isn't it a little strange that I didn't see your comment on this gifted young lady, athletes who really need our support, not Michael Phelps and the 1% ers.

http://essex.patch.com/articles/kenwood-s-foster-qualifies-for-junior-olympics

Ms. Foster is a real role model and these young adults and athletes are our future, not someone who thinks LA is in Patterson Park.

You send Mr. Phelps your check, I'm sure he can use it. Speaking of taxes who do you think payed for this presidential party? I'm sure the O'Malleys could afford the whole darn flag of stitches if hey wanted to. A $24 dollar donation on their part is ludicrous.

This isn't a question of whether the O'Malleys or Michael Phelps or any other wealthy Americans could afford to fund the Olympic team. This is about a creative fundraising idea that gives ordinary Americans a way to feel like they are part of sending our athletes (and flag) to London. I, for one, think it's a great idea and plan to buy a stitch!

ATC, they fail to do the basic research or even use common sense. MOM rails against the rich and yet who is in the photo-op with him - one of the rich - asking for donations.

Why isn't the governor asking for the corporate sports world to help foot the bill. The Olympics is a cash cow in the land of the rich and there is nothing wrong with that, but don't lay the trash these folks like Steve, who is silent all of a sudden after I posted the NY coverage of the "nonexistent" party.

I guess the bottom line is many of them are part of the entitled and it's not their money. You won't hear from Steve today, he's in LA via Patterson Park.

I had a long talk with my mothers nurse who came from Nigeria at Manor Care last night. She had a masters and her husband had two masters degrees. Her children are honor students and she believes in discipline and hard, hard, work. She was surprised how far down the ladder our educational system is and the complete lack of respect for for accountability.

Her one daughter is headed for the Naval Academy. On the other hand for people like Steve, Jag and others we owe them. The law and hard work mean little to people who live off the government.

In the world rankings the U.S. is far down the ladder in education. We are ranked 25th in the field of math.

The initial complaint you made implied the governor should have donated more. Of course, the governor could have donated more and just not done it through this campaign of buying wristlets. Then you said this:

"You recently referred to me as making a raciest statement but isn't it a little strange that I didn't see your comment on this gifted young lady, athletes who really need our support, not Michael Phelps and the 1% ers."

I'm not going into the personal accusations in that comment but if you assume all Olympic athletes are fully funded like Michael Phelps you are mistaken and disparaging the purpose of this campaign. http://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/804894/how-athletes-fund-their-olympic-experience Pretty sure if Athletes were part of the 1% they wouldn't need part time jobs (see points 2 and 3 of that post).

Not all Olympic sports pay well and guarantee success. Oddly enough there's a great SNL skit that poked fun at this: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/93/93obeat.phtml

Corbin if you make a typo and find it before the post becomes permanent, highlight it,copy it, delete it, paste it and make your corrections and re post.

I am fully aware that not all Olympians are in the same category of Mr. Phelps, however given the frivolous nature of the way this nation spends money on such things as bridges to no where and presidential Halloween parties you would think we could come up with the money to support a project as important as the Olympics. Just think priorities.

I also find it strange that people attack me as a bigot and yet fail to mention when I make a positive comment. Narrow mindlessness is their strong point.

I would much rather see the big name athletes and their corporate sponsors take a more active role in this endeavor.

It (AA) is a winged nut and his/her facts are just a tad under the influence.

Too show how dumb these types are he/she makes accusations against me without any documentation other than his mouth and then wants me to provide documents for his lazy no-nothing that I'm lying.

You know what Buck, that is exactly why I have no qualms about blogging on the stories I do and I have some dandies lined up.

Some one up there will know who the winged job is and they can thank him/her for urging me to purge the system of insects like this. Now I've got work to do. Can't wait to get the documents on Main Sail LLC, write about the secret meetings on FH, and Kamenetz being less than candid with the facts with his councilman buddy.

Does every good deed have to be mocked and politicized? Were any of you at Times Square in mid April to see the launching of this campaign "Raise Our Flag" sponsored by the U.S. Olympic Committee? Obviously not. Our flag, the AMERICAN FLAG, is due to be completed in mid July ( and is currently being made in NJ) will be carried "proudly" by our athletes in the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
To Arbutus Town Crier: as an FYI- there is no more Walter Reed... remember they merged with Bethesda Naval Hospital last year.... I have close relatives who work there and care for the returning veterans and/or their spouses. As for George Clooney: He sponsored "America: A Tribute to Heroes" a concert and telethon dedicated to the memory of those lost on the September 11th and the families they left behind. The concert aired commercial-free on the four major networks just 10 days after the attacks. It featured performances by 21 artists and raised more than $150 million. Have you been able to sponsor anything?

Hey Frank explain what kind of word you used? I would expect a nobody who criticizes a real person might want to do so correctly. You do know what a complete sentence is don't you? There is a period in there at the end of one.

Laura, I have developed a thick skin. The term I used referring to ArcAngel is one that is posted via Google. It is not uncommon for commentators to follow you around ready to pounce on your every word if it does not fit into their agenda.

I have had many debates with real people and sometimes they get heated but are always civil mainly because we are real people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingnut_%28politics%29

I took some liberty because of the name chosen, i.e. ArcAngle (two wings) with the intention of some deflective humor.

I am also a member of The Sun Talk Board and things can get rough over there to. They have full time monitors of the site who work shifts to keep the lid on. Sorry I did not see your first comment. I'm all over the place and sometimes things get by me.

I love this site and would do anything to protect it and make it flourish.

Laura, would you please tell us what the official Patch definition of a public figure is? Are you a public figure. Is Buzz? I'll say it again, WOW!

Thanks for your question, ArcAngel. What I meant by that comment is that if a commenter attacks another commenter in the comments, that's a violation of the terms of use. But, criticizing, say, Gov. O'Malley (i.e., saying that his way of governing is horrible, or saying that he's the worst governor in the world) wouldn't be a violation. There's actually a separation, in legal terms, between public and private figures, and elected officials are generally public figures, so they put up with more criticism. I don't know if I'm a public figure - I'm not elected, and I try to do my job as best as I can, respecting everyone here, and getting the facts right in stories, etc. I try my best, but I'm only human, as are we all. I would rather be a private figure - I'm not a run-for-office sort of person.

Hello Arbutus Town Crier - Sometimes Patch will block users, but that's pretty drastic, and it's not a decision that I can make - my managers make those decisions. I've alerted them to the comments here, because I'm not sure I can monitor everything, and I needed their wisdom in monitoring. They've helped a little bit, too, in monitoring today. Patch users also help us in monitoring things - and I really appreciate their help - thanks!

Ok Laura, If that is the case, then wouldn't many more of the off topic comments here fit that criteria, not just mine. Heck, some of my comments didn't even refer to an individual commentator and I resent them being removed. We're all big boys and girls here and enjoy what should be (and used to be) a fairly free exchange of commentary. It looks like you are favoring certain individuals, and that is selective censorship. This is but one of the cuts (of one thousand) that will doom this forum to obscurity.

Thanks for your comment ArcAngel. It's very useful to me, and helps me focus on what is needed to be done. There have been a few editors moderating this post today, so perhaps there are a few too many cooks in the kitchen, or maybe not enough. Anyway, I'm sorry if we didn't moderate the best today, and we can't always catch every comment - otherwise, there would be no news stories written...! Tomorrow is another day, fortunately. Soon I will close the computer for the night...

When you put it on the line then you speak with authority. All real hero's. It must be sad when you life doesn't count for so much, you can't use your real name.

Mr. Buzz have you noticed how many people are NOT letting you get away with writing these "wild and crazy" theories? You must be a person who just likes conflict. I'm glad I didn't speed in Dundalk, god forbid. I can vision your ticket writing and arrest demeanor and truthfully ,it scares me. You must have have had one heck of a power trip lo those many years. Tough to lose that power, eh? And now you believe you can regain it with a keypad, fantasy land!

Mr. Richardson, how many years of government service do you have? I spent 39 years in the police department working in a variety of fields.

I am a writer and have worked as a free-lance for the Sun and worked for the News American, a Hearst publication.

I have a wide range of sources and contacts at all levels of the government. If I were to write "wild and crazy" theories as you say, don't you think I would have been sued by now? I write the truth because I was a professional. Check out my web site and look for yourself.

The only fantasy land is your lack of knowledge on the subjects at hand. I suggest you do you homework and research before you insert your foot in thy mouth.

Can you believe this? Their both full of information and yet they no nothing.

Here is the term as provided by the courts.

http://scholarship.law.wm.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2223&context=wmlr

Frank can't eve do research on line to determine anything, while AA is flapping his wings in the breeze.

Well jeezy peezy AA he must be a public figure if you say so, but I don't know anything about him cause I don't know how to use my computer very good! (sic).

AA I think he's as a public figure cause I can see his face so he must be, but I'm really just guessing.

I am a public figure, BUT NOT A PUBLIC OFFICIAL. There is a big difference between the two. A public official does the business of the public i.e. government business as in politician or other public business and therefore held to a higher standard. Opinions and criticism is allowed.

A person my not deliberately slander (spoken) or libel (written) either. The latitude accorded to those who criticize public officials is broad because they (the public official) enter the arena with a clear understanding of their roles.

I am not, repeat, not a public official and therein lies the difference. You both need to go back to high school and take a civics class.

Sorry AA but "bashing of all things and everyone, are more than enough to make Mr. Beeler a "public figure". Yes, no?", the answer is no. Your definition has no bearing on the issue. Read my link if you can follow it.

Everyone makes typos, but the difference between "no" and "know" and "their" and "they're" isn't an issue of typographical error. Anyways, I'm just trying to convince you to leave everyone alone. Can't believe you were able to immediately hijack this thread with the 1st and 3rd comments, which have nothing to do with this article. It's sad that you have to come here and start crap just for the heck of it. It's called "trolling" and no one finds it to be pleasant.

Please, buy a diary if you feel the need to put all your extraneous and irrelevant comments to paper. Or, at the very least, when someone such as DawnP comes along and tries to redirect your focus to the actual issue and to reality, respond to her if you have a relevant difference of opinion. Otherwise, move on with your life. Spending your retirement sitting there calling everyone dumb 20 different ways is beyond sad.

Frank then practice what you preach. You don't need quotes around the word submit. It is not a title or proper noun and you are not quoting someone unless you are talking to yourself.

It should be if you choose either - submit - or (submit).

The word I used was not personal assistant. The don't read copy. A copy editor does.

Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others;(Steve)
Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected;
Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it;(Steve)
Refusing to set aside trivial preferences;
Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; (Steve common sense)
Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.”(Steve)

Jill and Colton, there is a dynamic here that is taking place. It has to do with ratings, views, comments and numbers. Bottom line is to stir the pot. By doing so you create ratings.

The show must go on. There are people depending on it, hard working people.

Jill, the only reason the Golden Girls is in reruns is it achieved enough episodes to be sold into syndication, other wise Blanche would not have an afterlife.

I hope you understand the dynamic now and the reason behind it.

You aren't helping by joining in. Are suggesting you support this kind of deception or are you part of it? So honest discourse means nothing to you? You rail against injustice of the government and instead of demanding accountability you support the opposition. Would your sons be proud of that stand? I think not. Integrity is an important part of any human endeavor.

Where is your outrage over this type of individual? It's OK for you to rail, but not for others is that what you're saying? Have you been appointed editor. If you don't like the banter then why do you read it?
