Wednesday: E-ZPass Open House In Havre de Grace

An open house will be hosted by the MdTA at the Havre de Grace Activity Center.

The Maryland Transportation Authority will hold an open house Wednesday night to offer motorists another opportunity to learn about and enroll in E-ZPass plans, according to a news release.

The open house will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Havre de Grace Activity Center at 351 Lewis Lane.

MdTA officials will be on hand to inform locals about the E-ZPass plans, as well as to enroll motorists in a plan. Anyone interested in enrolling in plan should bring vehicle license plate numbers and cash, check or credit card, the MdTA said.

See below for plan details.

The final day to use an AVI decal at the Hatem Bridge toll plaza is Sept. 30, and Aug. 31 is the final day to purchase AVI decals.

Another open house will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Perryville High School.

The Hatem Bridge is one of three options to cross the Susquehanna River in Maryland—along with the Tydings Bridge (Interstate 95) and the Conowingo Dam (U.S. Route 1).

E-ZPass transponders are offered in two options:

  • CHOICE A: an E-ZPass for use on the Hatem Bridge only. The annual fee is $10, with no fees, pre-paid toll deposits or account statements. The transponder is free until Jan. 31, 2013, when the price moves to $9 for a new transponder. This option is considered the "AVI equivalent" by the MdTA.
  • CHOICE B: an E-ZPass valid wherever E-ZPass is accepted. This account is $10 per year for Hatem Bridge use, and includes a $25 pre-paid balance for use at other toll facilities. It is subject to a transponder charge and a monthly account fee, unless used at least three times the previous month to pay tolls in Maryland. This plan offers a 10 percent discount off the cash rate at Maryland toll plazas. It is considered the more flexible option by the MdTA.

Motorists also may sign up for E-ZPass online, or visit the JFK or Hatem Bridge stop-in centers.

Yes, I'm enrolled in one of the forced EZPass plans. And I've already gotten a notice for a toll violation on the Hatem bridge when my transponder did not read in the EZPass only lane. I was told I had to pay a fine because it said my license plate was not listed on my account. When I called to complain because my license plate IS listed on my account, I was told that I actually got the notice because I used the wrong lane and I should have used lane 5 (which is also not true, as that is the decal-only lane). I will be holding our elected representatives accountable come election time for not properly defending our community from the political games that have plagued the Hatem facility for years. I resent not only that I'm being forced to purchase a product from a third party in order to use our roads, but also that we are footing the bill for the bad financial decisions made regarding the ICC and the MdTA's other pet capital investments.

There's a "Plan C", also. If you already have an EZPass transponder/account you can "add" the Hatem Bridge arrangement (same access as plan A). Your credit card will get dinged for the $10. This avoids having two transponders, one always having to be lead-bagged. At the clinic they said this add could be done over the phone w/ EZPass.

You can only add Hatem bridge if you have a Maryland transponder account. I learned this from a friend who visits regularly, and tried to add Hatem to his New Jersey transponder.

I tried several times to sign up online. We already have a MD EZ pass. It just kept going in circles. Anyone know how to do it? Think I'll just have to go to their offices, which keep pre-school hours.
