Volunteers, Contractor Building Home For Veteran
Homes For Troops will outfit SSG Kelly Keck with a new home in Havre de Grace.
SSG Kelly Keck lost his right leg in Afghanistan.
In Havre de Grace, Keck is being given a home.
The Homes For Troops program is beginning a new home construction for Keck and his family at 3406 Old Level Road outside of Havre de Grace.
The construction starts Friday and will run through the weekend.
Portions of Old Level Road will be closed for the project. Volunteers can park at the Level Fire House.
The project will be lead by general contractor Bob Ward Companies, Inc., of Edgewood.
The new home will replace the Keck family's townhome, where SSG Keck struggles to maneuver in a wheelchair and to constantly go up and down the steps.
"You can't get a wheel chair in the house without getting off of it and carrying it," he said in a video included with this post.
The project will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The project will rely heavily on volunteers, who will assist the general contractor in the build-out. The hands-on work for volunteers will include "framing interior walls, installing windows, hanging doors, shingling the roof, and installing siding," according to an email from event organizers to volunteers.
"I was astonished on several aspects of the organization," Keck said in the video. "I was amazed to find out what they did and how well it was done. It's a magnificent home that is built with character, care and pride. I'm grateful."
More volunteers are needed for the project. To get involved, click here.
"It just shows, there's people out there that do care for veterans," he said. "I'm grateful."

Absolutely I will be there. Havre de Grace knows how to support our troops and I will be looking for more from this wonderful community to be there. This is a National endeavor and we will be there for SSG Kelly Keck and the Building Brigade.

What a fantastic weekend! We completed the three day Build Brigade in two days! The house now has a roof with shingles, siding, windows and doors. The Keck family is so nice and so grateful. I am so proud to participate in this effort!
