UPDATED (Saturday, 6 a.m.)—A tanker truck was ablaze Friday night after overturning on MD Route 222 in Port Deposit.

A building fire was under way as a result of the overturned tanker, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association.

The Cecil Whig reported the driver of the gasoline truck died in the accident.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Friday at MD Route 222 and Main Street in Port Deposit. Harford County companies, including Darlington, Level and the Susquehanna Hose Company responded to the blaze, Gardiner said.

A Havre de Grace city staff member told Patch that lights at a downtown restaurant went out at the time of the crash.

The fire lit the Main Street area of Port Deposit, and sent a plume of smoke over the Susquehanna Riverfront community.

The Harford fire companies either rendered aid on site or filled in at stations for Cecil County companies that were on the scene.

Susquehanna Hose Company Chief Scott Hurst said as many as 30 Havre de Grace firefighters were on the scene at one time, with four pieces of equipment in tow. About half of them remained at hte scene as of 10:40 p.m.

"They plan on being there for several hours tonight," Hurst said at 10:40 p.m..

It's the second overturnred tanker in Port Deposit this month. Last week, another truck overturned in town as it lost its brakes, tumbling into a condo development on the Susquehanna River waterfront.
