Should The Field House Bare Anyone's Name?

Havre de Grace Patch asks readers the Question of the Day.

Earlier Thursday, Patch editor Sean Welsh suggested Havre de Grace High School name its yet-to-be constructed field house after Jovan Brooks.

At worst, he suggested, the Warriors' team room in the field house should bear Brooks' name.

Many noteworthy Havre de Gracians have had landmarks named for them—most of them public parks.

James R. Harris Stadium itself is named for a former coach and athletic director at Havre de Grace High School.

Some groups have suggested re-naming the high school after specific individuals.

There are plenty of former Havre de Grace students—too many, really—that have left us too soon. Many of them are deserving of more public recognition than they currently receive.

About this column: Havre de Grace Patch wants to know what you think.
Would you support naming the field house or a team room in the field house after Jovan Brooks or another former Warrior? Who else should be considered for such an honor? Tell us in the comments.

When I see very nice people suggesting names for municipal buildings, I often wonder if they are familiar with people whose generation is earlier than the generation of the names being considered. Maybe it is time for the rest of us to let the younger folks know about some former athletes and coaches who went on to accomplish much even after their stellar activities here. I guess what I am concerned about is that in the last week I have seen well meaning folks suggest the names of really terrific folks to be ther recipients of having buildings named for them. That in itself is a singular honor - not one to be considered without a lot of quiet scrutiny. There are many ways to honor people who have contributed immensely to Havrre de Grace. Maybe we ought to explore those ways before we commit ourselves .

I'm sure Jovan was a nice kid, but so was Franz Miller. Most people don't remember him but he played football for Havre de Grace in the 70's and suffered a brain injury and died on the field. My point is that there are tragedies every day of the year, and its hard to honor one without potentially doing a dishonor to another.

Why doesnt the building have a hall of fame, and then a wall in memory of all athletes that left too early ?
