Should Havre de Grace Consider a City Shuttle?
Councilman Jim Miller suggested the idea at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
There's a new bus route coming to Aberdeen, Havre de Grace and Perryville in the near future that will enable travelers to commute within those communities.
Residents of Aberdeen could travel to Havre de Grace to visit shops, Havre de Grace residents could go to the Hollywood Casino, and Perryville residents could ride to Havre de Grace for hospital visits.
But Havre de Grace City Councilman Jim Miller took the idea one step farther during Tuesday's City Council meeting.
Why not have an in-town shuttle that would enable residents to ride a set loop around the community?
Aberdeen and Bel Air both have inner-community shuttles. Why not Havre de Grace?
Mayor Wayne Dougherty said he was a proponent of the idea in years past, when it was suggested while Dougherty was on City Council. Dougherty said the idea was ultimately shot down as "cost prohibitive."
Would you support a Havre de Grace shuttle? What stops would you include on the shuttle? Tell us in the comments.

City Hall, McDonald's, the Visitor's Center, Library, Harford Memorial Hospital. Those are just a few.
Where else would you like one to stop?

Although the stops at McDonalds, etc, sounds pretty skevy.

How about up on the hill? Maybe come up the hill via 155 and stop at Canvasback, then on to Bulle Rock Parkway, stop at the circle, come down Chapel, stop at Goforth & Chapel, Tydings & Chapel, then to McDonald's and then into town and back up again. I'm sure there are many Havre de Grace taxpayers who would benefit from it venturing out of the immediate town area. And since we can't walk to town from the hill without risking our lives on 155 or Chapel, it would be a nice benefit.

There are a lot of older and return-to cyclists "up the hill" that would benefit from such a bus with a standard two-bike rack. Many of our customers like to ride, dine and shop in downtown HdG but aren't ready for the steep ride home, RT40 crossings or 155. Just a thought. Loading and unloading bikes on modern bus racks takes about 45 seconds.

I think a dedicated, possibly protected bike lane would serve that better. It wouldn't necessarily have to follow a steep, existing road either.

Such a bus, besides uniting our neighborhoods and offering car-free local errands and visiting, could also help people arriving by boat, car or bike experience a round-the-horn tour of HdG.

I like both of your comments. Especially the trip back up the hill and boaters.

I've heard the idea floated before and it only makes sense. I like what Dot had to say, but add on those of us over here by Meadowvale (we have no access to downtown unless by car... we have no sidewalk going down 155) and of course run it to the Activity Center and possibly include Brewsters/Pit Stop/M&T Bank down on 40. There is certainly more to our "community" then downtown (afterall, it isn't 1952, folks...it's 2012 and the city has become a rather "big little city").
At what cost to taxpayers? How about the savings on gas to our residents, lack of parking downtown being settled by a shuttle, bringing people to OUR city center for a Friday night out or a Saturday shopping spree, etc. It's a smart decision. The one thing that I would caution is the police keeping a heavy eye on it. We've had a few rather odd crimes in the past couple months... you never know when the hoodlums and thugs will try something on a "town shuttle."

Harford County Transit provides the busses for Bel Air and Aberdeen. I just wanted to know why the citizens of Havre de Grace are not offered the same services provided by the county. After all Havre de Grace is still a part of Harford County.

As I think this idea is a very town friendly idea, I also would hope that there are stops made along Chapel road. We also enjoy biking downtown, but not the walk back up the hill. A bike rack on the bus would get good use from many I'm sure. A stop at
the BP for those to catch a connecting bus around the county, and lets not forget Greeneay farms

I think the bus is a good idea but bike racks......come on....who is going to secure them?
Who is going to be responsible when they fall off and damage someones property?

Seriously, a bus for HdG is the best thing I've ever heard of. Also, the bike racks are super cool. Everyone rides bikes down in FL and they have bike racks on the buses here, and I've seen people take their bikes off in a few seconds.

If people can afford to throw away money gambling at Hollywood Casino, they can afford to pay for a taxi. I do not want my tax dollars funding gambling ventures.

That portion of the article references the bus route that has already been approved, running between Aberdeen, Havre de Grace and Perryville. The shuttle bus Councilman Miller suggested would be an in-town bus. -Sean

Just for the record, we do not sell bus bike racks. They come standard mounted to the front of many buses, now. They are very easy to load and unload, the wheels sit in cradles, with a lock bar that swings over. Most cyclists can figure them out without any assistance from bus operator the first time, and after the first time it's a snap. Loading a pair takes about 45 seconds. Thought it was important for readers to understand our shop does not sell them and has no intention of so doing.
We ARE glad that bike racks will be standard on the planned Cecil/Harford cross-county bus--to provide cyclists means to cross the Hatem Bridge. We have offered a paid bridge crossing service to long-distance cyclists since 2006 that we are very glad to see put out of business, soon!

Yes I think this would be nice there are so many people in town that don't or can't drive anymore for them this would be fantastic. Or for those that just don't like to drive.
But the question is, how much is this going to cost us tax payers. Lets count the cost before we get to far ahead of ourselves.

As a stay at home mom with one car that goes to work with my husband I would LOVE for this to happen! I would be especially interested in stops at Tydings park and the Library. A post office stop wouldn't be a bad idea either! I do agree that a stop at Weis is a must. I imagine that would be a VERY popular stop in the winter. I am not assuming this is a free service. We would have to buy some sort of a pass would we not?

I think we need to look at getting a shuttle very seriously. This is another way to bring all of Havre de Grace together and help unite the East side and the West side.
I go on record with this official name suggestion: "The East Side West Side Ride"

So many say "not out of my pocket" to this idea, not realizing that by bringing people downtown it will raise revenues, which in turn can keep our property taxes down. So, here is a solution: In Portland, Oregon, they have parking garages every so many blocks. The cost (at least in the 90's) was 25 cents a day. Cheap? Yes, because the garages are financed & subsidized by the businesses downtown. The same can be applied to the the idea of a 'town trolley bus'. And why not? It can only benefit *all* of us...
