Police Chewing Over Mystery of Man Seeking 100 Cases of Gum

A man with a French accent allegedly wanted to purchase 100 cases of chewing gum in a downtown Havre de Grace business recently.

Havre de Grace police are investigating a suspicious man who allegedly wanted to purchase 100 cases of chewing gum from a downtown business recently.

Police spokesman PFC Jeff Gilpin said the owners of Just For Fun reported a suspicious man with a French accent visited the store on Aug. 2 looking to make a large purchase of gum. The transaction never happened.

The following morning, the store owners reported receiving several overnight phone calls from an unrecognized number. Upon calling that number, the store owners said the man on the other end of the line had a similar accent to the suspicious individual that visited the store.

Anyone with information may contact the Havre de Grace Police Department at 410-939-2121.

Maybe he was a child during WW 2 and wants to repay the American people for all the gum handed out when the Americans liberated his country.

I guess it's more important to focus Police resources on the Mysterious Pierre Le Gum. Where will he strike next?! The town's GUM is not safe. I guess Pierre Le Gum did it.... Just For Fun.

We know this sounds rather funny and frivolous, however, a few bits of information were left out. If the request for 4,000 sticks of gum to send to South Africa was all we dealt with, that would be fine. Very unusual, but ok, it would be dropped. But it was after receiving a call at 1:21am, 9:25am, and 10:59am on our cell phone asking to come to our “warehouse” to buy “pictures” to send to South Africa that prompted the call to the police. This sounded strange to us. We just wanted to make the police aware of this situation because it could have been the start of a scam in our area (the man who first came into our store said he got our store name and a few other names of other stores in town off the internet, and he thought they might be able to help him.) We were just trying to prevent anything bad from happening to our fellow shop owners. If anyone would like the complete unedited version of this story, please stop by our store and we’d be happy to talk!

I think it is more the bizarre behavior of the man who requested the gum, rather than the idea of a silly request that is the issue. Many who have created havoc with their mass weapon attacks on the public demonstrated strange behavior before becoming true dangers.

Not meaning to offend anyone, we're just having some fun with the headline. You're right though err on the side of caution.

ALWAYS play it SAFE - take nothing for granted - report all unusual happenings - this is not the 50's - we live in a strange world these days and it is our duty to report as we see fit - this i see as odd and definitely would report - support - don't criticize and try to be cute/

We should ALLl be alert in the sense, that a 'strange' behavior must be report to the authorities. Yes, I feel safe living in HDG, but there is some crazy people with crazy ideas and this might be an easy target for THEM to act. We have bridges close by and we do not know what some people with bad intentions have in their minds. Let's play safe for the entire community!
